8returns ‑ Returns portal vs Stateset Returns Automationfor Shopify (2026)
8returns ‑ Returns portal and Stateset Returns Automation both aim to streamline the returns process for Shopify merchants in 2026, but they take significantly different approaches. 8returns positions itself as an all-in-one, fully customizable returns platform that emphasizes customer experience and brand integration through a self-serve portal. It appears geared towards merchants seeking a comprehensive solution they can directly control and tailor to their brand. Stateset, on the other hand, focuses on autonomous reverse logistics, targeting merchants who already have a robust customer service infrastructure built on platforms like Zendesk or Gorgias. It aims to automate the behind-the-scenes logistics of returns after an RMA has been approved by a CSR, leveraging machine learning and direct integrations with Shopify's APIs. The primary distinction lies in their target audience and approach to automation. 8returns offers a customer-facing portal with extensive customization options, providing merchants with granular control over the entire returns experience. Stateset concentrates on backend automation, focusing on optimizing the reverse logistics workflow and integrating with existing customer service platforms. Stateset's value proposition hinges on reducing the workload of customer service and warehouse teams through automated processes like label printing, refund processing, and product condition classification, while 8returns highlights improved customer loyalty and reduced return rates through a positive returns experience and return analytics.

Our Verdict
For merchants seeking a comprehensive, customizable returns portal to directly manage the customer experience and align it with their brand, 8returns ‑ Returns portal appears to be the stronger choice, given its positive rating and focus on customer retention features. Its self-serve portal and dynamic rules offer greater control over the returns process. However, merchants who already utilize Zendesk or Gorgias for customer service and are primarily concerned with automating the backend reverse logistics workflow may find Stateset Returns Automation a better fit, despite the lack of reviews. Its machine learning for product condition classification and focus on automating refunds could significantly streamline operations for larger businesses or those with complex return handling needs.
Without user reviews for Stateset, it's difficult to definitively recommend it over 8returns. The ideal scenario would be for merchants to test both platforms to assess their compatibility with existing workflows and customer service strategies. However, the absence of reviews and the requirement of existing platforms may make the barrier to entry higher.
