Our Verdict
For merchants needing robust control over custom product data, including advanced data types and template creation, ACF: Metafields Custom Fields is the clear choice. Its higher rating, greater number of reviews, and detailed feature set indicate a more mature and capable app. File Manager ‑ Custom Folders might be suitable for merchants with simple file management needs, but its limited information and low rating make it a riskier choice. Given the information available, it's difficult to recommend File Manager ‑ Custom Folders unless file management is *the* sole priority and no alternatives exist. Generally, ACF: Metafields Custom Fields is the safer and more versatile option for most Shopify stores.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up and use?
Based on the larger number of reviews and more detailed documentation likely accompanying it, ACF: Metafields Custom Fields likely offers a more straightforward setup experience, although the complexity of metafields, in general, can be daunting. It has the benefit of wider user experience to pull from.
Which app is better for managing product images?
ACF: Metafields Custom Fields supports file uploads as a metafield data type, so it could be used to manage product images alongside other product data. However, without more information, it is unclear how efficiently File Manager ‑ Custom Folders manages product images specifically. ACF appears to allow linking images to product variants, which enhances control.
Can I use these apps to create custom product templates?
ACF: Metafields Custom Fields explicitly states that it allows you to form a structure of any page and save it as a template to create, which suggests it's well-suited for creating custom product templates. File Manager ‑ Custom Folders doesn't mention template creation.
Which app is more scalable for a large Shopify store?
ACF: Metafields Custom Fields, with its bulk editing, import/export capabilities, and focus on structured data, is likely more scalable for a large Shopify store with a diverse product catalog. File Manager's value add around organization is less impactful for large-scale usage.
Which app is a better value for money?
Without pricing information, it's impossible to determine definitively. However, considering the significantly higher rating, reviews, and broader feature set of ACF: Metafields Custom Fields, it's likely to provide better value for most merchants even if it is more expensive. It provides more features, stability and user feedback to help solve issues. It provides a richer, proven feature set than File Manager.
