Aftersell Post Purchase Upsell vs SMART Checkout Rulesfor Shopify (2026)
Aftersell Post Purchase Upsell focuses on increasing revenue after a customer has completed a purchase by offering upsells. SMART Checkout Rules, on the other hand, concentrates on optimizing the checkout experience itself by providing merchants with granular control over payment, shipping, and discount options. While Aftersell aims to maximize order value after the initial purchase, SMART Checkout Rules seeks to improve conversion rates by streamlining the checkout process and applying conditional logic. This difference positions them for distinct use cases: Aftersell for merchants prioritizing post-purchase revenue growth and SMART Checkout Rules for those focused on optimizing the pre-purchase customer journey. Aftersell's higher number of reviews (669 compared to SMART Checkout Rules' 66) suggests broader adoption and potentially more established use cases, though SMART Checkout Rules boasts a slightly higher rating (4.9/5 vs 4.8/5). SMART Checkout Rules offers features like blocking or hiding checkout methods based on customer tags, country, cart value, or products and allows for dynamic sorting/renaming of options. This level of control makes it well-suited for merchants with complex shipping requirements, B2B scenarios, or those needing to prevent high-risk orders. Aftersell's specific feature set isn't listed here, making a precise feature comparison difficult, but the name indicates that it is related to upselling after an order is placed.

While its impact on initial checkout flow is limited, its focus on post-purchase engagement is valuable for maximizing lifetime customer value.
Common Questions
Which app is better for reducing cart abandonment?
SMART Checkout Rules is likely better for directly reducing cart abandonment. By streamlining the checkout process and presenting relevant payment/shipping options based on customer attributes, it can remove friction and increase conversion rates. Aftersell focuses on what happens *after* the initial purchase.
Is either app suitable for a beginner?
Aftersell might be easier for beginners to implement, as its scope is narrower and focused on post-purchase upsells. SMART Checkout Rules, with its flexible conditions and rule-based system, may require more initial setup and understanding of checkout processes.
Can these apps be used together?
Yes, they are complementary. SMART Checkout Rules can optimize the initial purchase flow, while Aftersell can maximize revenue *after* that purchase is complete. Using both could lead to a more optimized customer journey and increased overall revenue.
Which app is better for international businesses?
SMART Checkout Rules offers features that directly benefit international businesses, such as blocking or hiding checkout methods based on country and applying smart shipping logic based on delivery method. This allows for a tailored checkout experience for different regions. The description of Aftersell doesn't suggest any specific benefits for international businesses.
How important are the review counts in this comparison?
The review counts suggest Aftersell has a larger user base and potentially more established use cases. However, SMART Checkout Rules' higher rating, despite the lower review count, suggests high satisfaction among its users. Consider the specific needs of your business and whether the specialized features of SMART Checkout Rules outweigh the broader adoption suggested by Aftersell's review count.
