Our Verdict
AgeX is the clear choice for merchants selling age-restricted goods, especially if they operate in multiple countries. Its strength lies in preventing underage access and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. Nova is ideal for merchants concerned about GDPR compliance, particularly those targeting the EU market. While AgeX has a perfect rating, the significantly higher number of reviews for Nova suggests it has a broader user base. For Shopify stores concerned with both age verification and GDPR compliance, using both apps might be the most comprehensive solution, as they address different legal requirements.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to use?
Both apps claim ease of use, but Nova explicitly mentions a 'code-free style editor' and 'seamless workflow' within the Shopify admin, suggesting a potentially simpler initial setup and customization process. AgeX doesn't detail ease of use as prominently.
Which app is better for international stores?
AgeX is designed specifically for international stores with its multi-language support and country-based age rules. Nova offers options to show the banner globally or in the EU.
Can I use both AgeX and Nova on my store?
Yes, AgeX and Nova address different legal requirements (age verification and cookie consent, respectively), so using both could provide more comprehensive compliance.
Does Nova automatically block cookies if the user declines consent?
No, Nova displays the banner but requires you to provide instructions in your privacy policy on how to decline cookies. It appears the merchant needs to manage the actual cookie blocking through other means.
Which app is more important for avoiding legal penalties?
The 'importance' depends on your business and target market. AgeX is crucial if you sell age-restricted goods and risk fines for underage sales. Nova is crucial if you target EU customers and risk GDPR penalties for improper cookie handling.
