AgeX ‑ age verification popup vs UserWay Website Accessibilityfor Shopify (2026)
AgeX and UserWay Website Accessibility are both Shopify apps categorized under 'Legal,' but they address fundamentally different compliance needs. AgeX focuses on age verification, providing tools for merchants selling age-restricted products to comply with regulations by implementing customizable popups with country-specific rules and multi-language support. It targets businesses needing to restrict access based on age to avoid legal issues and maintain ethical sales practices. UserWay, on the other hand, centers on website accessibility, aiming to help merchants meet ADA, WCAG, and other accessibility standards to ensure inclusivity for users with disabilities. The primary difference lies in their target audience and the type of legal compliance they address. AgeX is for merchants selling age-restricted products, while UserWay targets merchants concerned about providing an accessible website for all users, including those with disabilities. UserWay boasts AI-powered solutions and live monitoring for accessibility violations, whereas AgeX emphasizes customization and ease of use with its pre-made templates and SEO-friendly design. Furthermore, the stark contrast in ratings and the number of reviews suggests significant differences in user satisfaction and perceived value between the two apps.

Our Verdict
For merchants selling age-restricted products, AgeX appears to be the superior choice, given its high rating, positive reviews, and specific focus on age verification. The customizable popups and country-based rules are essential for ensuring compliance and preventing underage purchases. UserWay is a better fit for merchants prioritizing website accessibility and inclusivity. However, the lower rating and fewer reviews should prompt further investigation before committing to this app.
Ultimately, the choice depends on the specific legal and ethical considerations of the merchant's business. If age verification is paramount, AgeX is the clear winner. If website accessibility is the primary concern and budget is not the main issue, UserWay might be considered but with caution, considering the low ratings. Merchants might even consider using both apps if both age-restricted sales and accessibility are priorities.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up?
Based on the descriptions, AgeX seems more straightforward to set up with its pre-made templates and focus on user-friendliness. UserWay mentions AI-powered solutions, which might imply a more complex initial setup or require ongoing monitoring.
Which app is more likely to prevent lawsuits?
Both apps aim to prevent lawsuits, but for different reasons. AgeX reduces the risk of fines related to selling age-restricted items to minors. UserWay reduces the risk of lawsuits related to website accessibility violations. Your choice depends on your specific business risks.
Which app offers better SEO benefits?
AgeX explicitly mentions being 'SEO-friendly,' suggesting that it's designed not to negatively impact search engine rankings. UserWay might indirectly improve SEO by making your website more accessible to search engine crawlers, but this benefit is not explicitly stated.
Is UserWay worth the risk given its low rating?
Potentially, but careful consideration is required. The low rating might indicate issues with functionality, customer support, or pricing. Reviewing recent reviews or contacting UserWay directly for clarification is recommended before making a decision. Alternatively, explore other website accessibility apps with higher ratings.
Which app is more important for my business?
The importance of each app depends entirely on your business model and the products you sell. If you sell alcohol online, AgeX is crucial. If you are committed to making your website accessible to everyone, UserWay or a similar app is more important. Some businesses may require both.
