AirLock ‑ GeoShield & IP Block vs Airwallex Fraud Protectionfor Shopify (2026)
AirLock ‑ GeoShield & IP Block and Airwallex Fraud Protection are both Shopify apps in the 'Fraud' category, but they address different aspects of security. AirLock focuses on proactive control, allowing merchants to block traffic based on IP address and country, even offering Shopify Plus users checkout-specific blocking. Airwallex, on the other hand, provides real-time fraud detection powered by AI, designed to increase payment success rates and lower fraud rates during transactions. Airlock’s emphasis is on manual control and location-based restriction, while Airwallex centers on automated fraud prevention based on transactional analysis. AirLock appears to target merchants who want direct control over who can access their store, potentially aiming at preventing scraping, bot traffic, or access from regions known for fraudulent activity. The value proposition is direct control and the ability to customize the user experience for blocked visitors (blank screen, popup, or redirect). Airwallex, however, seems aimed at larger businesses processing high volumes of transactions, leveraging AI to dynamically assess risk and improve conversion by optimising 3DS authentication. It emphasizes security compliance and payment success rates.

Our Verdict
For merchants who prioritize direct control over who accesses their store and want to block specific countries or IP addresses, especially if they are on Shopify Plus and want checkout protection, AirLock ‑ GeoShield & IP Block is the better choice. Its strengths lie in its simplicity and direct control. However, the small number of reviews should be considered.
On the other hand, Airwallex Fraud Protection is more suitable for larger businesses processing a high volume of transactions who want an AI-driven, automated fraud prevention solution. Its focus is on optimizing payment success rates and reducing fraud through real-time analysis, backed by strong security compliance. Given its lower rating and limited reviews, it's advisable to look for recent reviews and potentially alternative solutions before committing.
Common Questions
Which app offers better protection against bot traffic?
AirLock offers a more direct approach to blocking bot traffic by allowing merchants to block specific IP addresses or countries known for bot activity. Airwallex might indirectly reduce bot traffic through fraud detection, but it's not its primary function.
Which app is easier to set up and use?
Based on the descriptions, AirLock likely offers a simpler setup due to its focus on direct IP and country blocking. Airwallex, with its AI-powered engine, likely requires more complex configuration and data integration.
Which app is more suitable for a small business with limited resources?
AirLock is likely more suitable for a small business due to its simpler features and direct control. It doesn't require extensive data analysis or AI expertise.
Does Airwallex only serve businesses using their payment gateway?
The description mentions "millions of transactions across our entire network", so it's very likely that Airwallex Fraud Protection is designed to work best, or exclusively, with transactions processed through the Airwallex payment gateway. The app description does not make it clear whether it works with other gateways or not.
Is it possible to use both apps simultaneously for comprehensive fraud protection?
Potentially, but it could create redundancy or conflicts. AirLock provides proactive blocking, while Airwallex offers reactive fraud detection. It's crucial to understand how each app impacts the checkout process and payment flow to avoid interfering with legitimate transactions. Testing in a staging environment is highly recommended.
