AirLock ‑ GeoShield & IP Block vs Real ID ‑ ID verificationfor Shopify (2026)
AirLock ‑ GeoShield & IP Block and Real ID ‑ ID verification are both Shopify apps targeting fraud prevention, but they approach the problem from different angles. AirLock focuses on blocking unwanted traffic at the IP and country level, positioning itself as a protective shield against potential threats and malicious actors. Its strength lies in its proactive blocking capabilities and Shopify Plus exclusive checkout UI blocking features. This positions it for merchants experiencing issues with unwanted international traffic, bot attacks, or specific known malicious IP addresses. Real ID, on the other hand, centers on verifying customer identities to prevent chargeback fraud and ensure compliance with age-restricted goods. Its focus is on confirming the legitimacy of customers placing orders. Real ID streamlines the verification process by offering pre, during, or post-checkout verification options, automatic customer tagging for repeat verification, and the ability to trigger verification based on order characteristics. This positions it for businesses selling age-restricted products, those with high chargeback rates, or merchants wanting to confirm customer identities before fulfilling orders. The small number of AirLock reviews compared to Real ID could also be a factor in determining which app merchants choose based on overall social proof, despite the higher rating.

Our Verdict
If a merchant is primarily concerned with blocking unwanted traffic and preventing access from specific regions or IP addresses, particularly if they are a Shopify Plus user wanting to protect the checkout, AirLock is the better choice. Its proactive blocking features provide a strong defense against bot attacks and other malicious activity.
However, if a merchant is more focused on verifying the identities of their customers to reduce chargebacks, ensure age compliance, or prevent fraud related to identity theft, then Real ID is the more suitable option. Its automated ID verification and repeat customer recognition features offer a streamlined and efficient solution for confirming customer legitimacy.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up and use?
Based on descriptions, both apps aim for ease of use. AirLock emphasizes its simplicity in blocking, and provides a demo store. Real ID highlights 'no code required'. Usability testing would ultimately determine true ease of use.
Which app provides more comprehensive fraud protection?
It depends on the type of fraud. AirLock protects from IP-based threats, while Real ID protects from identity-based fraud and age-related compliance issues. They offer complementary, not overlapping, protection.
Which app is better for a store with a large international customer base?
If the store is facing fraudulent orders or bot activity from certain countries, AirLock could be used to block those regions. Real ID remains helpful for verifying identities regardless of location, especially for age-restricted products.
Does either app integrate with other fraud prevention tools?
Neither description explicitly mentions integrations with other tools. Merchants would need to check the app documentation or contact the developers for integration details.
Which app requires more ongoing maintenance and monitoring?
AirLock requires monitoring of visitor logs and potential adjustments to blocking rules based on detected threats. Real ID's automated verification process likely requires less active monitoring, but the results of ID checks should still be reviewed periodically.
