Our Verdict
For Shopify merchants primarily concerned with accessibility and improving SEO specifically through optimized alt text, AltGenius: Alt Text Optimizer is a solid choice. The app's focus on alt text, coupled with its customizable templates and scheduling feature, provides fine-grained control over this aspect of SEO. However, if merchants are also struggling with large image sizes that impact site speed, SEO Speed Image Optimizer offers a more comprehensive solution. Its ability to resize images, coupled with alt text optimization and SEO reporting, provides a holistic approach to image-related SEO issues. While SEO Speed Image Optimizer has a higher rating and more reviews, merchants should choose based on whether they need only alt text optimization or a broader image optimization solution.
Common Questions
Which app is better for a store owner who is not tech-savvy?
Based on the descriptions, both apps aim for ease of use with features like automatic optimization and bulk editing. However, SEO Speed Image Optimizer's 'one-click' bulk image edit might be slightly easier for a complete beginner as it encompasses more processes at once.
Does either app offer a free trial?
The provided information does not indicate whether either app offers a free trial. Checking the Shopify App Store listing for the most current trial information is recommended.
If my site already has alt text, can either of these apps update the existing text?
Both apps claim to optimize alt text, implying they can update existing text. However, the level of customization and control over the update process may vary. AltGenius specifically mentions customizable templates, suggesting a higher level of control over the new alt text generated.
Is it better to focus on alt text optimization or image resizing first?
Generally, both are important for SEO. However, focusing on resizing large images that significantly slow down your site is typically recommended. A fast site provides a better user experience and is favored by search engines. Alt text optimization can follow to further improve accessibility and SEO.
Which app is better for long-term SEO improvement?
SEO Speed Image Optimizer has an edge with its SEO Image Report feature, allowing merchants to track optimization progress and SEO impact. This data-driven approach enables continuous improvement. AltGenius' scheduling feature allows periodic updating of alt text which also supports long-term SEO.
