Alva Courses vs Digital Downloadsfor Shopify (2026)
Alva Courses and Digital Downloads both cater to Shopify merchants selling digital products, but their offerings are vastly different. Alva Courses positions itself as an all-in-one platform for creating and selling structured online courses. It boasts features like video hosting, quiz integration, certificate generation, and discussion forums, aiming to help merchants turn their expertise into revenue streams by offering a complete learning experience. Digital Downloads, on the other hand, focuses on simplifying the delivery of various digital files associated with products. The primary distinction lies in the scope: Alva Courses facilitates the creation and sale of organized courses with multimedia content and interactive elements, while Digital Downloads streamlines the delivery of downloadable files. Alva Courses targets merchants looking to build and sell comprehensive educational products, offering a richer, more structured experience. Digital Downloads appeals to merchants who want to easily attach digital files (e.g., ebooks, art, templates) to existing products, offering a simpler, more direct download functionality.

Our Verdict
For Shopify merchants seeking to create and sell structured online courses with video content, quizzes, and certification, Alva Courses appears to be the more suitable option. Its all-in-one approach simplifies course creation and delivery. However, the extremely limited review count of Alva Courses is a significant risk. Merchants should proceed with caution and thoroughly test the app before committing.
If a merchant simply needs to attach downloadable files (like ebooks or digital art) to existing products without creating a full-fledged course, Digital Downloads is likely a better fit. The lower rating and higher review count suggest some usability issues, but also that the app has been tested by a substantial user base. Its simplicity and focus on direct file delivery make it ideal for straightforward digital product fulfillment.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up?
Both apps claim easy setup, but Digital Downloads likely requires less configuration as it focuses on attaching files to existing products, while Alva Courses involves creating course structures and content.
Which app is better for selling video courses?
Alva Courses is specifically designed for video courses, offering video hosting and course structure features. Digital Downloads is not optimized for this.
Which app is more reliable?
Digital Downloads has significantly more reviews, suggesting a larger user base and potentially a more stable app, despite its lower rating. The single review for Alva Courses makes its reliability difficult to assess.
Can I use both apps together?
Potentially, but it would be redundant. Alva Courses is designed as an all-in-one course platform. Using Digital Downloads alongside it wouldn't add significant value unless you wanted to attach additional, separate downloadable files to course materials.
Which app is better for building a learning community?
Alva Courses explicitly offers features for cultivating learning communities through discussion tools, making it better suited for this purpose than Digital Downloads.
