Arc: llms.txt vs Legal Pagesfor Shopify (2026)
Arc: llms.txt and Legal Pages are Shopify apps catering to different, although somewhat overlapping, needs of merchants in 2026. Arc: llms.txt focuses on improving a store's visibility to Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude by automatically generating and maintaining an `llms.txt` file, acting as a specialized sitemap for AI crawlers. It promises to enhance SEO within AI-driven search and shopping experiences. In contrast, Legal Pages targets a more fundamental aspect of business operations: creating and publishing essential legal documents like Privacy Policies and Terms of Service. It streamlines the process of generating these pages using AI, aiming to build trust with customers and facilitate approval with payment providers like Stripe and PayPal. The primary distinction lies in their respective value propositions. Arc: llms.txt is for tech-savvy merchants looking to optimize their store for the emerging AI landscape, while Legal Pages serves a broader audience, particularly new merchants, needing assistance with crucial legal compliance and operational setup. Both apps claim ease of use through automation, but they address entirely different business needs. Arc's success hinges on the continued importance of `llms.txt` for AI indexing, while Legal Pages addresses an evergreen need for compliant legal documentation.

Our Verdict
For merchants deeply concerned with optimizing their store's presence in AI-driven search results and conversational commerce, Arc: llms.txt is the clear choice. Its focus on `llms.txt` files and LLM indexing makes it a specialized tool for the AI-forward retailer. The positive rating and existing reviews further support its value. However, a risk exists if `llms.txt` doesn't become a universal standard. For new or less technically inclined merchants, Legal Pages offers a more fundamental and broadly applicable benefit. Ensuring legal compliance with a Privacy Policy and Terms of Service is crucial, and the app's promise of easier payment provider approvals is compelling. While it lacks reviews currently, its focus on essential legal pages makes it a solid investment, especially for those who don't have existing legal documentation.
Common Questions
What is an `llms.txt` file and why is it important?
According to Arc: llms.txt's description, an `llms.txt` file is like a robots.txt and sitemap.xml file but designed specifically for Large Language Models. It allows these AI crawlers (like ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.) to better understand and index the content of your Shopify store, potentially improving your visibility in AI-driven search results.
Does Legal Pages generate lawyer-approved legal documents?
The app description states that it 'auto-creates professional pages,' but does not claim they are lawyer-approved. It is advisable to consult with a legal professional for tailored advice and document review, especially for businesses operating in regulated industries.
Which app is easier to use?
Both apps claim ease of use. Arc: llms.txt boasts 'one-click generation,' suggesting minimal effort. Legal Pages requires answering a few questions, which may take slightly longer but allows for more customization. Without user reviews for Legal Pages, it's impossible to definitively say which is easier, but both appear designed for non-technical users.
Are both apps necessary for all Shopify merchants?
No. Legal Pages provides fundamental legal documentation that is highly recommended, especially for new merchants. Arc: llms.txt is more niche and suitable for merchants actively seeking to optimize their AI search visibility.
What happens if my products change? Do I need to regenerate the `llms.txt` or legal pages?
Arc: llms.txt states it provides 'automated refresh' for the `llms.txt` file to keep up with changes. Legal Pages doesn't explicitly state automated refresh, so manual updates after product changes might be required, or the generated pages might need reviewing to ensure alignment with changes.
