AVP ‑ Age Verification Popup vs Shopify Formsfor Shopify (2026)
AVP ‑ Age Verification Popup and Shopify Forms are both Shopify apps utilizing pop-ups, but they serve fundamentally different purposes. AVP is a specialized app focused solely on age verification, ensuring legal compliance for stores selling age-restricted products. Its core strength lies in its dedicated age verification features like date of birth verification, customizable templates designed for age restrictions, and page-specific access restriction. Shopify Forms, on the other hand, is a more general-purpose tool for lead generation and data collection. It offers customizable forms for various purposes, including collecting wholesale leads, subscriber signups, and other essential business information, leveraging pop-ups and inline forms to achieve this. The primary difference lies in their specialization. AVP provides a focused solution for a specific legal requirement, whereas Shopify Forms offers a broader range of marketing and data collection capabilities. AVP caters specifically to merchants needing to comply with age restrictions, such as those selling alcohol, tobacco, or adult content. Shopify Forms targets a wider audience looking to grow their contact list, generate leads, and gather customer data for marketing purposes. While both utilize pop-ups, the context and functionality are significantly different, dictating which app is appropriate depending on the merchant's specific needs. Shopify Forms integrates deeply with the Shopify ecosystem, promising to boost conversions among Shop users and securely store and leverage customer data within the platform. AVP focuses on ease of use, claiming no coding is required and offering swift setup for a secure age checker.

Our Verdict
For merchants selling age-restricted goods, AVP ‑ Age Verification Popup is the clear choice. Its specialized features, focusing on legal compliance and age verification, are essential for safeguarding their business. The higher rating and dedicated age verification functionalities make it a more suitable option in this specific use case.
However, for merchants seeking a broader lead generation and data collection tool, Shopify Forms offers more versatility. Its customizable forms, integration with the Shopify ecosystem, and ability to collect various types of information make it a valuable asset for marketing and customer relationship management. While its rating is slightly lower, the significantly higher number of reviews suggests wider adoption and potentially more diverse use cases.
Common Questions
Can Shopify Forms be used for age verification?
While Shopify Forms can collect date of birth information, it lacks the specific compliance features and pre-built templates designed for age verification that AVP offers. It's not primarily designed as an age gate solution and may not fully meet legal requirements for age-restricted product sales.
Does AVP integrate with Shopify's customer data?
The provided description of AVP doesn't explicitly mention integration with Shopify's customer data in the same way Shopify Forms does. Its focus is primarily on restricting access based on age rather than integrating with broader customer profiles.
Which app is easier to customize?
Both apps offer customization options. AVP highlights customizable templates specifically for age verification popups, while Shopify Forms focuses on customizing forms with text, images, metafields, and discounts. The ease of customization likely depends on the specific needs of the merchant. AVP probably has more focused template designs, while Shopify Forms may offer greater overall creative control.
Which app is more cost-effective?
The descriptions don't provide pricing information. Cost-effectiveness would depend on the specific pricing plans of each app and the features required by the merchant. A free plan (if available) for one versus a paid for the other, with similar functions would swing the cost-benefit analysis.
If I need both age verification and lead generation, which app should I choose first?
If your primary concern is legal compliance with age restrictions, AVP should be your priority. You can then explore using Shopify Forms (or another lead generation app) in conjunction for broader marketing efforts. Neglecting age verification could lead to legal issues, making it the more critical immediate need.
