Backup Labs vs CartShark Securityfor Shopify (2026)
Backup Labs and CartShark Security, while both categorized under 'Security - Other' in the Shopify app store, address drastically different security concerns. Backup Labs focuses on data recovery and redundancy, providing automatic backups of store data like products, orders, and themes, ensuring business continuity in case of data loss or corruption. Its strength lies in simplifying data management and offering a safety net against unforeseen circumstances, positioning itself as a solution for merchants prioritizing data security and disaster recovery. Backup Labs also offers a means for merchants to duplicate their store for testing and expansion. CartShark Security, conversely, is positioned as a proactive security measure against checkout skimming and malicious code injections. It continuously scans for harmful scripts that might compromise customer payment information, offering real-time alerts to merchants. Its strength is in preemptively detecting and preventing checkout-related fraud, making it suitable for merchants prioritizing customer data protection and maintaining a secure payment environment. This proactive security approach is valuable given the increasing sophistication of online threats. The stark difference in user feedback is also a critical factor, with Backup Labs having a perfect rating (albeit from a small sample size) compared to CartShark's lack of reviews.

Our Verdict
For merchants primarily concerned with safeguarding their store's data against accidental deletion, corruption, or other data loss scenarios, and those seeking to duplicate their store easily, Backup Labs is the clear choice. Its automatic backups and one-click restore capabilities provide peace of mind and a crucial safety net. The positive reviews, although limited, further support its reliability.
However, for merchants specifically worried about checkout skimming and fraudulent activities that could compromise customer payment information, CartShark Security might seem appealing. Despite the lack of reviews, its focus on proactive checkout security scanning and real-time alerts is a strong selling point. However, the absence of reviews and validation compared to the backup app makes it a riskier choice. Merchants should carefully consider the risk of checkout skimmers before deciding if this app fills their needs.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up?
Both apps claim to have easy setups. CartShark states 'install in minutes, no technical skills or developer time required.' Backup Labs does not explicitly state the same, but with daily automatic backups and one click store restoration, it can be assumed to have a similar level of ease.
Which app offers better data privacy?
Backup Labs explicitly states that data is securely stored in Switzerland, which may offer enhanced data privacy due to Swiss data protection laws. CartShark Security doesn't specify data storage locations.
Which app provides a better return on investment (ROI)?
This depends on the specific needs of the merchant. If a merchant experiences data loss, Backup Labs' ROI will be high as it allows for easy recovery. If a merchant is targeted by checkout skimming, CartShark Security's ROI could be high by preventing financial losses and protecting customer data. Without more data on probability of the threats that each app helps resolve, it is difficult to evaluate a higher ROI.
Does either app impact website performance?
Neither description mentions any impact on website performance. It's possible that CartShark Security's continuous scanning might have a minor impact, but this is not explicitly stated. Further testing would be required to verify.
Which app offers more comprehensive security?
It depends on your definition of comprehensive. Backup Labs offers comprehensive *data* security through backups and secure storage. CartShark Security offers comprehensive *checkout* security through skimming detection. They address fundamentally different security needs.
