Backup Labs vs OTP Login with Phonefor Shopify (2026)
Backup Labs and OTP Login with Phone are both Shopify apps within the 'Security - Other' category, although they address fundamentally different aspects of store security. Backup Labs focuses on data security through automatic backups, data restoration, and staging store creation, storing all data securely in Switzerland. This positions it as a disaster recovery and store management solution. In contrast, OTP Login with Phone prioritizes login security by replacing traditional passwords with one-time passwords sent via phone or email. This caters to enhanced account security and streamlining the user login experience. The key difference lies in their primary focus. Backup Labs safeguards store data against loss or corruption, while OTP Login with Phone secures customer accounts against unauthorized access. Backup Labs appeals to merchants concerned about data integrity and needing a backup and restore solution. OTP Login with Phone aims to improve the login experience and security for customers by eliminating the need for passwords. While both have a perfect 5/5 rating, OTP Login with Phone has significantly more reviews (39) than Backup Labs (8), indicating a broader user base, or perhaps the app has been on the market longer.

Our Verdict
The choice between Backup Labs and OTP Login with Phone depends entirely on the merchant's specific needs. If data security and the ability to restore or duplicate the store are paramount, Backup Labs is the clear choice. Its automatic backups and secure data storage in Switzerland provide peace of mind.
However, if the primary concern is enhancing account security and simplifying the login process for customers, OTP Login with Phone is the better option. While data security is always important, data breaches on the *merchant's* store infrastructure is a different concern than user *account* breaches. OTP Login addresses the latter. Given its higher number of reviews, it appears to have found a wider audience seeking improved login security.
Common Questions
Does Backup Labs protect against account hacks like OTP Login with Phone?
No, Backup Labs focuses on data backup and restoration, not account security. It won't prevent unauthorized access to customer accounts.
Can OTP Login with Phone backup my store's data?
No, OTP Login with Phone is designed solely for secure login and does not offer any data backup or restoration features.
Which app is easier to set up and use?
Backup Labs is likely easier to set up and use, as it's primarily a 'set and forget' solution for automatic backups. OTP Login with Phone requires configuring OTP settings and potentially integrating with an SMS provider.
If I only choose one, which app provides broader security coverage?
While both are in the 'Security' category, each provides niche protection. A merchant may want to seriously consider prioritizing OTP Login because compromised accounts impact *users* directly. Data breaches related to the merchant may have an impact, but the user will not care about the data breach if their account is compromised. However, depending on the value of the store and product line, a merchant may prioritize backing up their store's data over all else, if downtime directly cuts into the store's profitability.
Are both apps compatible with all Shopify themes?
OTP Login with Phone explicitly states it is compatible with all free and paid themes. Backup Labs does not mention theme compatibility explicitly, but compatibility is implied due to its data-centric nature.
