Bony: Checkout Rules & COD vs Essential Upsell & Cross Sellfor Shopify (2026)
Bony: Checkout Rules & COD and Essential Upsell & Cross Sell are both 5-star rated apps within the Shopify Checkout category, but they address fundamentally different needs. Bony focuses on customizing and controlling the checkout process itself, enabling merchants to refine payment and shipping options, implement restrictions, and mitigate fraud. Essential Upsell & Cross Sell, on the other hand, is geared towards increasing average order value (AOV) by suggesting related and complementary products to customers during their shopping journey. Essentially, Bony is designed for merchants who need granular control over their checkout process and want to optimize it for security and efficiency. This includes merchants dealing with high-risk orders, specific geographical limitations, or those requiring customized payment options. Essential Upsell & Cross Sell targets merchants looking to boost sales and AOV by strategically showcasing product recommendations and bundles, providing a path for customers to increase their cart value before checkout. Both integrate into the checkout flow, but one focuses on control, the other on expanding the shopping cart.

Our Verdict
The choice between Bony: Checkout Rules & COD and Essential Upsell & Cross Sell depends entirely on the merchant's primary goals. If the main concern is managing the checkout experience, mitigating risks associated with COD orders, or implementing specific payment restrictions, then Bony is the clear choice. Its rule-based system offers fine-grained control.
However, if the primary objective is to increase AOV through strategic product recommendations and cross-selling opportunities, then Essential Upsell & Cross Sell is the superior option. Its focus on showcasing related products and bundles makes it ideal for merchants looking to maximize sales without altering the core checkout functionality. Some merchants could even use both, as they solve different problems and can coexist peacefully to optimize the checkout flow from both sides: security and sales.
Common Questions

Bony: Checkout Rules & COD directly addresses this issue by providing features to block risky COD orders based on smart checkout conditions.
Which app helps increase average order value (AOV)?
Essential Upsell & Cross Sell is specifically designed to increase AOV through product upsells, cross-sells, and product bundles.

Which app is easier to set up and use?
Based on the descriptions, Essential Upsell & Cross Sell likely has a more straightforward setup due to its pre-built recommendation widgets.
