Camouflage: Hide Sold Variants vs Varia ‑ variants on collectionfor Shopify (2026)
Camouflage: Hide Sold Variants and Varia - variants on collection are both Shopify apps dealing with product variants, but they address fundamentally different needs. Camouflage focuses on improving the customer experience by managing the visibility of unavailable variants. Its primary strength lies in its ability to hide, disable, or style sold-out variants, preventing customer frustration. It also offers sophisticated control based on location, customer tags, and inventory levels. This makes it ideal for merchants aiming to streamline the buying process and prevent disappointment related to out-of-stock items. Varia, on the other hand, aims to enhance product discoverability by displaying variants as separate products on collection pages. This strategy aims to improve visibility and boost sales. Varia's main benefit is its ability to make product variants more prominent, increasing the chances of customers finding and purchasing specific styles, colors, or sizes. It offers customization in how variants are displayed in collections, and can also be used with infinite scroll. While Camouflage is about refining the customer experience once on the product page, Varia is focused on drawing customers to the product page in the first place. The target merchant base for Camouflage is likely those managing products with frequent stock fluctuations, while Varia caters to shops with many variations who want improved product discoverability, like fashion and home goods retailers.

Our Verdict
The choice between Camouflage and Varia depends entirely on the specific needs of the merchant. If the primary concern is preventing customer frustration due to out-of-stock items and optimizing the existing product page experience, Camouflage: Hide Sold Variants is the clear choice. Its high rating and extensive review count suggests strong user satisfaction.
Conversely, if the goal is to improve the discoverability of product variants and drive sales through increased visibility on collection pages, Varia - variants on collection is the better option. The lower rating and review count might warrant further investigation into user feedback before making a final decision, but the app addresses a unique need that Camouflage does not.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up?
Based on the descriptions, it's difficult to say definitively. Camouflage offers complex conditions for hiding variants, which could make initial setup complex. Varia involves variant assignments, which could also require a learning curve.
Can I use both apps together?
Potentially, yes. Camouflage could hide sold-out variants while Varia splits available variants into separate products on the collection page. However, merchants should carefully consider whether that's the experience they want and if they would conflict
Which app is better for a clothing store?
Varia is likely better for a clothing store with many colors and sizes, as it helps make each variant visible on the collection pages. Camouflage could then be used as well to ensure sold-out variants are not shown.
Does either app affect SEO?
The descriptions don't mention SEO. Varia might have an indirect impact on SEO if the separated variants are indexed as individual products. This is something that should be tested.
Which app offers more options for customization?
Camouflage appears to offer more options for customization, with its ability to hide based on location, customer tags, and inventory levels. While Varia also allows for customization in terms of what is shown in which collections, it seems less robust.
What happens when Varia marks a variant as separate product, but it's sold out? Does it hide it automatically?
The descriptions don't offer any information about that. It might require a manual intervention, or a complementary app like Camouflage to do so.
