Canteen ‑ Deposits and Fees vs Essential Upsell & Cross Sellfor Shopify (2026)
Canteen ‑ Deposits and Fees and Essential Upsell & Cross Sell are both Shopify apps targeting improvements to the checkout experience, but their goals and target audiences differ significantly. Canteen focuses on automating and managing complex deposit and fee structures, particularly relevant for businesses dealing with refundable deposits, environmental fees, or location-specific charges like Pfand or CRV. It's positioned as a compliance and operational tool for merchants in specific industries or regions. Essential Upsell & Cross Sell, on the other hand, aims to boost Average Order Value (AOV) through various upsell and cross-sell techniques. It targets merchants looking to increase revenue by suggesting related or complementary products during the customer journey. The critical difference lies in their functionality. Canteen streamlines the checkout process by accurately calculating and displaying necessary fees and deposits, while Essential Upsell attempts to enhance the checkout by promoting additional purchases. Although both affect the checkout, they are addressing entirely different merchant needs. Canteen focuses on accurately reflecting costs related to products or regions while Essential Upsell is sales oriented. Given that both apps share the checkout Shopify category, a merchant may need one app or both depending on their operational and sales strategies.

Our Verdict
For merchants specifically needing to manage deposits, fees, and surcharges (e.g., bottle deposits, handling fees), Canteen ‑ Deposits and Fees is the clear choice. Its features cater directly to these operational and compliance requirements. Its focus is ensuring accurate calculation and display of charges at the checkout.
However, for merchants primarily focused on increasing sales and AOV through product recommendations and upsells, Essential Upsell & Cross Sell is the better option. Its extensive features for cross-selling, upselling, and creating bundles make it a powerful tool for boosting revenue. If a merchant needs *both* solutions, they could potentially use both apps in conjunction, but it's crucial to ensure compatibility and avoid confusing the customer at checkout.
