Canteen ‑ Deposits and Fees vs Magical Fees & Tariffsfor Shopify (2026)
Canteen - Deposits and Fees and Magical Fees & Tariffs both cater to Shopify merchants needing to automate and manage additional charges like deposits, fees, and surcharges. However, they differ slightly in their emphasis and target audience. Canteen appears to be particularly strong for businesses needing to manage complex, region-specific deposit systems like Pfand, CRV, and other container-related fees. It highlights detailed configuration options for these specific types of fees, alongside other general fee types. Magical Fees & Tariffs, while also capable of handling deposits, positions itself as a more generalized solution for adding any kind of fee, surcharge, or tariff, including percentage-based charges, and location-based fees, potentially appealing to a broader range of merchants. Canteen focuses on deposit and recycling fees and supports Shopify POS well, making it suitable for retailers selling goods with container deposits or requiring in-person handling of fees. Magical Fees & Tariffs offers a broader toolkit, including percentage-based and order subtotal fees. This versatility positions it favorably for businesses requiring flexible fee management across various order types and scenarios, as well as a location-based and payment-method fees.

Our Verdict
For businesses heavily involved with bottle, can, and container deposit systems (like those operating in regions with Pfand or CRV regulations), Canteen - Deposits and Fees offers a specialized and likely more streamlined solution due to its explicit focus and feature set tailored to those specific use cases. Its full Shopify POS support further strengthens its value for retailers managing these fees in-store.
However, if a business requires a more general-purpose fee and surcharge management tool that includes percentage-based charges, location-based fees, payment-method fees, and wider tariff implementation, Magical Fees & Tariffs would be a more versatile choice. The higher rating and review count also suggest a potentially broader user satisfaction, though the specific needs of each business should ultimately dictate the best fit.
