Canteen ‑ Deposits and Fees vs SMART Checkout Rulesfor Shopify (2026)
Canteen - Deposits and Fees and SMART Checkout Rules are both Shopify apps focused on improving the checkout experience, but they target vastly different needs. Canteen specializes in automating mandatory deposit and fee rules, particularly those related to bottles, cans, and environmental fees, simplifying compliance with regional regulations like Pfand or CRV. Its strength lies in its detailed customization options for these specific fee types, offering flexibility in naming, thumbnails, tax behavior, and POS integration. In contrast, SMART Checkout Rules empowers merchants to control the entire checkout flow by applying conditional logic to payment methods, shipping options, and discounts. It's designed for merchants seeking to customize the checkout experience based on various factors like customer tags, cart value, or location, to optimize conversions or implement B2B logic. Canteen's target audience is primarily businesses selling products with associated deposits or fees, such as beverage retailers or businesses handling core charges. It offers a way to automate these often complex rules. SMART Checkout Rules caters to a broader audience, encompassing any merchant wanting to personalize the checkout flow based on customer attributes, order details, or other conditions. While both operate within the 'Checkout' category, Canteen focuses on fee management while SMART Checkout Rules addresses overall checkout customization and optimization.

Our Verdict
Canteen is the clear choice for merchants needing to manage bottle deposits, environmental fees, core charges, or similar mandatory add-ons. Its focused feature set and POS support make it ideal for businesses in those sectors, streamlining compliance and fee collection. On the other hand, if a merchant's primary goal is to customize the checkout experience based on customer segments, order values, or other conditions – for instance, B2B sellers, international stores, or those wanting to prevent high-risk transactions – SMART Checkout Rules is the better option. Its broader scope and conditional logic provide greater flexibility for tailoring the checkout flow.
Ultimately, the decision hinges on the merchant's specific needs. If the primary concern is fee management, Canteen is the winner. If the goal is a more dynamic and customized checkout experience, SMART Checkout Rules offers more comprehensive control.
Common Questions
Which app is better for handling international taxes on deposits?
Canteen specifically mentions tax controls for fee rules. SMART Checkout Rules doesn't focus on tax management, making Canteen a better option for handling international taxes on deposits if that's your priority.
Can SMART Checkout Rules add custom fees like Canteen?
SMART Checkout Rules does not directly add custom *fees* like Canteen. It focuses on controlling existing payment/shipping options and discounts. You would likely need a separate app for adding fees and then could potentially use SMART Checkout Rules to control the payment method associated with it.
Is Canteen suitable for a B2B store?
While Canteen focuses on fees, it *could* be used in a B2B context if the B2B products have associated core charges or deposits. However, SMART Checkout Rules is generally better suited for B2B stores due to its ability to customize the checkout based on customer tags or other B2B-specific criteria.
Which app has better support?
The provided data does not offer any information about the quality of support for either app. Review counts and ratings can sometimes indirectly suggest user satisfaction, but a higher rating with more reviews (SMART Checkout Rules) *could* indicate more robust support, but this is not guaranteed.
Which app requires coding knowledge?
Neither app description suggests a requirement for coding knowledge. SMART Checkout Rules emphasizes 'without code,' implying it's designed for non-technical users. While Canteen doesn't explicitly mention this, its focus on configurability suggests a similar user-friendly approach.
