Chargeback Specialist vs OTP ‑ CoD Order Verificationfor Shopify (2026)
Chargeback Specialist and OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification, while both categorized under 'Fraud' on Shopify, address fundamentally different aspects of fraud prevention and revenue recovery. Chargeback Specialist focuses on *after-the-fact* fraud mitigation by automating chargeback responses and identifying fraudulent disputes, primarily targeting fast-growing, high-volume eCommerce brands facing issues with unfair chargebacks. It leverages AI and human review to build robust responses, aiming to recover lost revenue. In contrast, OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification focuses on *pre-emptive* fraud prevention by verifying Cash on Delivery (COD) orders through OTPs sent via WhatsApp, SMS, or Email. This targets merchants, especially in regions like India, Pakistan, and the Philippines, where COD orders are prevalent and susceptible to fake orders and high Return-to-Origin (RTO) rates. By validating orders before dispatch, it aims to reduce failed deliveries, lower return rates, and protect profit margins. Therefore, the applications have an overlap in fraud prevention in the broadest sense, but attack completely different elements of fraud.

Our Verdict
The choice between Chargeback Specialist and OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification hinges entirely on the specific fraud challenges a merchant faces. If a store struggles with chargebacks and fraudulent disputes, particularly if they are a high-volume operation, Chargeback Specialist is the more appropriate solution. Its AI-powered responses and human review offer a robust approach to recovering lost revenue.
However, if the primary concern is fake COD orders and high RTO, especially in regions where COD is prevalent, OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification is the clear winner. Its focus on pre-emptive verification via OTP addresses the root cause of the problem by confirming orders before dispatch. The app may also be beneficial for stores with low average order values, where each loss from a fake order has a significant impact.
Common Questions
Which app is better for preventing fraud before it happens?
OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification is designed to prevent fraud before it happens by verifying COD orders with OTPs. Chargeback Specialist primarily addresses fraud after it has occurred by managing chargebacks.
Does Chargeback Specialist help with COD fraud?
Chargeback Specialist's primary function is to manage chargebacks and fraudulent disputes, which could indirectly assist with COD fraud if a customer initiates a chargeback. However, it doesn't directly prevent COD fraud in the way OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification does.
What type of technical expertise is required for each app?
Chargeback Specialist claims "One click Activation. No technical setup required.", suggesting minimal technical expertise. OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification mentions "Built-in Shopify OTP verification makes setup fast and frictionless," indicating a simple and straightforward setup process, but may still require some basic understanding of Shopify app installation.
Which app is more suitable for a small business with limited resources?
This is difficult to say without knowing the exact nature of the fraud, but for a smaller store, the one-click activation of Chargeback Specialist and it's potential to recover losses might be better, as opposed to the more specialised focus of OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification.
Are these apps mutually exclusive, or can a merchant use both?
A merchant *can* use both apps if they face both chargeback issues and fraudulent COD orders. OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification would prevent some fraud upfront, while Chargeback Specialist would handle any chargebacks that still occur.
