Checkout Guardian vs Protos: Security & Spy Protectfor Shopify (2026)
Checkout Guardian and Protos: Security & Spy Protect, while both categorized under 'Security - Other' in the Shopify app store, address distinctly different security concerns. Checkout Guardian focuses on controlling *who* can complete an order, based on custom validation rules applied at the cart and checkout. It targets merchants seeking granular control over order eligibility based on location, order quantity, customer history, and other business-specific rules. Protos, on the other hand, prioritizes intellectual property protection by preventing content theft, unauthorized copying, and brand protection. The fundamental difference lies in their approach. Checkout Guardian manipulates the checkout process based on predefined rules, enabling merchants to customize their customer's checkout experience to align with business strategies. Protos implements security measures to safeguard the store's content, preventing unwanted access and illegal exploitation of intellectual property. The ease of use appears high in both apps, with Checkout Guardian explicitly stating 'no coding needed,' and Protos emphasizing comprehensive protection with a single installation.

Our Verdict
Choosing between Checkout Guardian and Protos depends entirely on the merchant's specific security needs. If the primary concern is controlling *who* can place orders and tailoring the checkout process based on customized rules, Checkout Guardian is the clear choice. This is especially valuable for businesses with specific sales territories, order quantity limitations, or customer segment requirements.
However, if the priority is safeguarding the store's content, preventing unauthorized copying, and protecting intellectual property, then Protos is the superior option. Merchants selling original designs, proprietary information, or unique content will benefit most from Protos' comprehensive security features. The slightly higher rating of Protos might also sway merchants prioritizing user experience and perceived reliability, though the lower number of reviews should also be considered.
