Color Swatch King: Variants vs Customized: Print Automationfor Shopify (2026)
Color Swatch King: Variants and Customized: Print Automation are both Shopify apps that touch on product variants and customization, but they serve fundamentally different purposes and target distinct merchant profiles. Color Swatch King focuses on enhancing the shopping experience for products with multiple variants (color, size, etc.) by providing visually appealing and user-friendly swatch options. It aims to improve conversion rates by making variant selection quicker and easier. Its key strength lies in variant presentation and management, especially for products with a wide array of choices. It also optimizes variant discovery on collection pages. Customized: Print Automation, on the other hand, is tailored for merchants selling personalized or custom-designed products. It offers a built-in customizer that allows customers to upload images, add text, and preview their designs. Its primary strength is enabling customers to create unique products with print-on-demand fulfillment or custom artwork generation. It allows merchants to easily create and sell custom products, streamlines the artwork generation process, and provides the option to either use existing products or tap into a print-on-demand network. The 3D and AR preview is a standout feature. While both apps technically touch on product variants, their approaches differ significantly. Color Swatch King enhances the presentation of existing variants, while Customized: Print Automation allows customers to create entirely new variants (or personalized versions) through a visual design process.

Our Verdict
For merchants selling products with existing variants like clothing (sizes, colors), Color Swatch King: Variants is the superior choice. Its high rating, extensive review count, and features designed to improve variant selection make it a reliable option for boosting conversion rates. The ability to show swatches on collection pages and hide out-of-stock variants are particularly valuable.
Conversely, if a merchant's business model revolves around personalized or custom-designed products (e.g., custom phone cases, personalized mugs), Customized: Print Automation is the only viable option. While its rating and review count are significantly lower, it offers the necessary customizer functionality, print-ready artwork generation, and print-on-demand integration that Color Swatch King lacks. The lack of ratings should be considered carefully before making a decision.
Common Questions
Can Color Swatch King be used to sell personalized products?
No, Color Swatch King is designed to enhance the presentation and selection of existing product variants, not to enable customers to create entirely new designs or personalized products.
Does Customized: Print Automation handle product variants like sizes and colors?
While Customized: Print Automation might be able to integrate with variant options, its primary focus is on enabling customers to add unique customizations to products. It is not designed as a variant display and selection tool.
Which app is easier to set up?
Based on the descriptions, Color Swatch King likely has a simpler setup process due to its automation features and CSV upload capabilities. Customized: Print Automation requires more initial setup to define product customization options and integrate with print services.
Which app offers better support?
Color Swatch King explicitly mentions free app setup from product variation experts, suggesting more readily available support compared to Customized: Print Automation, where no support is mentioned.
If I sell t-shirts with different sizes and colors, and also want to allow customers to add a custom logo, which app should I use?
You would likely need both apps, or an app that combines their features. Color Swatch King to manage the existing size and color variants, and Customized: Print Automation (or a similar app) to enable the custom logo addition. Alternatively, you could seek an all-in-one solution or explore integrating the two apps via third-party services.
