Contribe vs Shortagefor Shopify (2026)
Contribe and Shortage are both Shopify apps in the 'Donations' category, aiming to help merchants integrate charitable giving into their online stores. However, they take significantly different approaches. Contribe focuses on enabling merchants to donate a portion of their sales to vetted impact projects, providing a customizable donation plugin and a performance dashboard to track impact. They emphasize brand building through association with existing charities, offering merchants the opportunity to choose impactful projects and communicate these choices to their customers. They also emphasize high-touch customer support. Shortage, on the other hand, directly connects merchants' inventory with the real-time needs of US-based nonprofits. It enables customers to donate items from the store's inventory, aligning purchases with specific charity wishlists. Contribe seems targeted towards merchants who want to strategically integrate social impact into their business model for brand enhancement and customer loyalty through more general charitable giving. Their platform offers a wider range of vetted impact projects and comprehensive tracking of KPIs related to their giving. Shortage caters to merchants who want to give customers direct involvement in charitable giving by donating physical items from their store. The ease of setup and focus on connecting specific products with nonprofit needs might appeal to merchants prioritizing straightforward implementation and tangible, product-based donations. With no current ratings or reviews, it is difficult to make a final determination about Shortage, making it more of a risk to use.

Our Verdict
Based on the available data, Contribe is likely the safer and more reliable choice for most merchants in 2026, due to its established positive rating and reviews. Merchants prioritizing comprehensive impact tracking, brand building through charitable giving, and dedicated support will find Contribe to be a better fit. Shortage, while offering an interesting approach with direct product donations, lacks any user feedback or evidence of its effectiveness. It is a riskier option for merchants willing to experiment with a novel approach and are primarily focused on easy implementation and product-based donations.
Shortage might become viable once it has a sufficient track record, especially for stores with inventory readily usable by the supported US-based charities. Until then, Contribe presents a more compelling and proven solution for integrating charitable giving into a Shopify store.
