Courses Plus vs FileJar ‑ Digital Downloadsfor Shopify (2026)
Courses Plus and FileJar - Digital Downloads both address the need for selling digital products on Shopify in 2026, but they target different segments. Courses Plus is geared towards merchants looking to create and sell structured online courses, coaching programs, and digital downloads, focusing on eLearning and community building. Its strength lies in offering comprehensive course creation tools, including quizzes, assignments, progress tracking, and certification. FileJar, on the other hand, positions itself as a general-purpose digital download solution, ideal for merchants selling various digital assets like ebooks, music, software, and license keys. It emphasizes ease of use, secure file delivery, and automation. The key difference lies in the product types they specialize in. Courses Plus prioritizes a learning management system (LMS) approach, offering features tailored for online courses, while FileJar is more versatile in handling various digital files. While Courses Plus provides AI course and quiz creation, and subscription models, FileJar focuses on streamlining the delivery and security of those digital files. The choice between the two apps depends on the primary type of digital product a merchant intends to sell and the level of sophistication required.

Our Verdict
For Shopify merchants primarily focused on selling online courses and building a learning community with quizzes, assignments, and certificates, Courses Plus is the clear choice. Its LMS-like features provide a comprehensive platform for delivering structured educational content. However, for merchants selling a diverse range of digital products, such as ebooks, music, software, or artwork, where ease of use and secure file delivery are paramount, FileJar - Digital Downloads offers a more streamlined solution. While both address the same need, Courses Plus offers features unnecessary for those simply delivering static digital files, whereas FileJar lacks the course creation and management features crucial for online learning platforms.
Given its much higher review count (160 vs 11), Courses Plus has been adopted by more merchants, which, coupled with its feature set, signals broader applicability *for those specifically selling courses*. However, the perfect 5/5 rating from FileJar indicates a high level of satisfaction amongst its user base. Therefore, FileJar should be strongly considered if simplicity and ease-of-use are paramount for a standard digital products business.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up?
FileJar - Digital Downloads is generally considered easier to set up due to its focus on simple file upload and product association. Courses Plus, with its more comprehensive feature set for course creation and management, may require more initial configuration.
Which app offers better security for digital files?
Both apps emphasize security. FileJar highlights download limits and fraud detection. Courses Plus secures course content but may not offer the same level of granular file-level security as FileJar. Consider specific security needs based on the type of digital product being sold.
Can I sell subscription-based access with both apps?
Yes, Courses Plus allows for membership subscriptions directly within the app. FileJar can integrate with Shopify's standard subscription features, but lacks dedicated features for member management and course enrollment linked to subscriptions.
Which app is better for selling software licenses and keys?
FileJar is specifically designed for selling products like software licenses and keys with instant delivery. Courses Plus, while capable of selling digital products, does not specifically highlight or optimize for this use case.
Which app is better for selling video content?
Both apps can handle video content. Courses Plus is purpose built to present video as part of a course and has management features to allow students to monitor the video. FileJar can provide direct download links. Courses Plus offers video courses with learning and assessment components. If the merchant just sells a video download, FileJar would be sufficient. If they want to manage video as part of a course, Courses Plus is the obvious choice.
