Dr Cart Shipping Rates & Rules vs JsRates: Custom Shipping Ratesfor Shopify (2026)
Dr Cart Shipping Rates & Rules and JsRates: Custom Shipping Rates both offer advanced shipping rate solutions for Shopify merchants, but they cater to different technical skill levels and needs. Dr Cart Shipping Rates & Rules is a comprehensive, feature-rich app designed for merchants who want a wide array of pre-built conditions and parameters to configure their shipping rules without requiring coding knowledge. It boasts a user-friendly interface with features like bulk import via Excel and a free shipping bar. JsRates, on the other hand, is geared towards technically proficient merchants or those with access to developers who need ultimate flexibility in crafting shipping rates using JavaScript. The primary difference lies in the approach to customization. Dr Cart relies on a vast selection of conditions and integrations, while JsRates provides a blank canvas with JavaScript coding to define nearly any shipping rule. This allows for highly specific and unusual shipping logic but demands programming skills. JsRates' Shopify Plus friendliness suggests it targets larger enterprises with complex shipping needs and the resources to leverage its coding-based approach. The smaller number of reviews for JsRates may indicate a more niche market or a newer app compared to the more established Dr Cart.

Our Verdict
For most Shopify merchants, especially those without coding expertise, Dr Cart Shipping Rates & Rules is the better choice. It offers a comprehensive set of features, a user-friendly interface, and native integrations with major carriers. Its Excel import/export functionality simplifies the management of complex shipping rules. However, if a merchant has highly specific or unusual shipping requirements that cannot be met by Dr Cart's pre-built parameters and has access to developers, JsRates: Custom Shipping Rates provides the ultimate flexibility to create custom shipping logic using JavaScript. JsRates is also the clear choice for Shopify Plus merchants who need maximum control over their shipping rates.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up for a non-technical user?
Dr Cart Shipping Rates & Rules is significantly easier to set up for users without coding experience. It offers a point-and-click interface and pre-built conditions.
Can I integrate with carriers like UPS and FedEx using both apps?
Dr Cart has native integrations for UPS, FedEx, USPS, and other major carriers. JsRates requires you to build the integration using their API and JavaScript code.
Which app is better for complex, conditional shipping rules?
Both apps can handle complex rules, but they approach it differently. Dr Cart achieves complexity through numerous parameters and combinations. JsRates achieves complexity through custom JavaScript code, allowing for virtually unlimited possibilities, but demanding programming knowledge.
Which app is more scalable for a large product catalog and numerous shipping zones?
Dr Cart's bulk import/export feature using Excel makes it scalable for managing a large number of rules and products. JsRates' scalability would depend on the efficiency of the JavaScript code written to handle the shipping logic and the server resources available.
Is either app only for specific Shopify plans?
