Drop: Instagram DM Marketing vs WAX: marketing on WhatsAppfor Shopify (2026)
In 2026, Shopify merchants choosing between Drop: Instagram DM Marketing and WAX: marketing on WhatsApp are facing two distinct approaches to conversational commerce. Drop positions itself as an AI-powered solution leveraging Instagram DMs for subscriber acquisition and engagement at scale, boasting an exclusive partnership with Meta. Its core strength lies in automated messaging and AI-driven campaign creation tailored for Instagram users. WAX, on the other hand, focuses on WhatsApp marketing with a French base, emphasizing conversational flows, cart recovery, and post-purchase engagement while prioritizing GDPR compliance. The primary difference lies in the chosen communication channel: Instagram DMs for Drop versus WhatsApp for WAX. This dictates the target audience and the potential reach. Drop appeals to merchants heavily reliant on Instagram for brand building and customer interaction, aiming to capitalize on the platform's direct messaging capabilities. WAX targets merchants seeking high open and response rates through WhatsApp, focusing on deploying specific use cases like abandoned cart recovery and back-in-stock alerts. The existing user base provides valuable insight with user ratings: WAX has a 5/5 rating based on 41 reviews, whereas Drop has no reviews and therefore no rating.

Our Verdict
For merchants deeply invested in Instagram marketing and seeking AI-powered automation for DM engagement, Drop presents a potentially innovative solution – assuming the claims regarding its Meta partnership and AI capabilities are valid and deliver tangible results. However, the lack of reviews introduces a significant risk factor. Merchants prioritizing proven performance and high engagement rates on WhatsApp, particularly those concerned with GDPR compliance, should strongly consider WAX.
Given the stark contrast in social proof and the emphasis on GDPR compliance by WAX, it is a safer choice for most merchants unless they have a very specific need for Instagram-based DM marketing and are willing to take a risk on a new, unproven app. Merchants for whom data privacy and established app quality are priorities will clearly favor WAX.
