Empact EU/UK VAT automation vs Report Toaster: Custom Reportsfor Shopify (2026)
Empact EU/UK VAT automation and Report Toaster: Custom Reports are both Shopify apps listed under the 'Finances' category, but they address vastly different needs. Empact focuses on simplifying VAT compliance for e-commerce businesses selling into the EU and UK, particularly non-EU/UK sellers navigating complex IOSS, OSS, and VAT number requirements. It essentially aims to eliminate the burden of VAT management by providing users with their own VAT number, automated reporting, and solutions for cross-border sales. Report Toaster, on the other hand, is a powerful reporting and analytics tool designed to provide merchants with deep insights into their shop's data through customizable reports. It enables merchants to track key metrics, analyze trends, and automate reporting for improved decision-making. Their differing ratings and review counts suggest a disparity in market adoption and user satisfaction. Report Toaster has a much more established presence, potentially owing to its more generalized utility compared to Empact's niche focus.

Our Verdict
The choice between Empact and Report Toaster hinges entirely on the merchant's specific needs. If VAT compliance in the EU/UK is a significant pain point, especially for businesses based outside these regions, Empact offers a seemingly comprehensive solution. The claim of providing instant VAT numbers is a major draw. However, the lack of reviews raises concerns. On the other hand, if the merchant is primarily focused on understanding and optimizing their business through data analysis, Report Toaster is the clear winner. Its high rating and substantial number of reviews suggest a reliable and valuable tool for advanced reporting, automation, and data-driven decision-making. A merchant could even utilize both: Empact for VAT and Report Toaster for other business analytics.
Common Questions
Does Empact handle VAT returns for me?
The description indicates Empact provides auto VAT reporting, which likely includes generating the necessary reports for VAT returns. However, it's unclear whether they directly file the returns or if the merchant is still responsible for that step.
Can Report Toaster help me forecast future sales?
Report Toaster allows for extensive data analysis and customization, suggesting that it *could* be used for forecasting. It depends on whether the merchant can create reports that analyze sales trends and identify patterns to inform predictions. The 130+ templates may include a forecasting report, though this isn't explicitly stated.
Is Empact suitable for a very small business with minimal EU sales?
Empact's applicability for very small businesses depends on their sales volume relative to the 10,000 euro threshold. If the business consistently remains below this threshold and is comfortable managing VAT themselves, Empact might be overkill. However, if the business anticipates growth or prefers to outsource VAT management entirely, Empact could still be worthwhile.
How does Report Toaster compare to Shopify's built-in analytics?
Report Toaster is designed for advanced reporting and customization, going beyond the basic analytics offered by Shopify. It provides more flexibility in creating reports, aggregating data, and automating reporting tasks, offering deeper insights than the standard Shopify analytics.
If I sell both B2B and B2C, which app is better?
Empact is clearly designed to handle both B2B and B2C sales. It makes no difference to their core function. If the issue is solely VAT compliance, Empact is the tool. Report Toaster can track B2B vs B2C sales, but will not automate anything regarding VAT reporting and collection.
