Essential Upsell & Cross Sell vs UpCharge Fees Addons Surchargefor Shopify (2026)
Essential Upsell & Cross Sell and UpCharge Fees Addons Surcharge both reside within the Upsell and Cross-sell category on Shopify, but cater to distinct merchant needs. Essential Upsell & Cross Sell is primarily focused on increasing Average Order Value (AOV) through product recommendations, bundles, and post-purchase offers. Its strength lies in its comprehensive suite of upsell and cross-sell features, allowing merchants to create diverse strategies for product discovery and increased sales. The app also focuses heavily on automated discounts and add-ons within the customer purchase journey. UpCharge Fees Addons Surcharge, on the other hand, is geared towards merchants requiring the ability to add and manage fees, surcharges, and tariffs to orders. Its strength lies in its ability to handle complex pricing scenarios, including location-based fees, percentage-based fees, and fees based on payment/shipping methods (Shopify Plus). This makes it suitable for businesses with varying cost structures, international sales, or those needing to account for specific service or handling charges. While it also offers the feature of product add-ons, the app is overall less focused on marketing and optimizing AOV.

Our Verdict
For merchants prioritizing boosting AOV and increasing product discovery through strategic upsells and cross-sells, Essential Upsell & Cross Sell is the clear winner. Its extensive features, high rating, and large number of reviews indicate a robust and effective solution for driving sales. The automation is a key benefit.
However, for businesses requiring a comprehensive solution for managing complex pricing scenarios, including fees, surcharges, and tariffs, UpCharge Fees Addons Surcharge is the better choice. Its specialized features, while not focused on upselling in the traditional sense, provide the necessary tools to accurately account for costs and manage diverse pricing structures, particularly for those on Shopify Plus utilizing payment and shipping method-based fees.
Common Questions
Which app is better for increasing average order value (AOV)?
Essential Upsell & Cross Sell is specifically designed to increase AOV through product recommendations, bundles, and post-purchase offers. UpCharge Fees Addons Surcharge focuses on adding fees, not promoting additional products.
Can both apps be used on the same Shopify store?
Yes, technically both apps can coexist. However, their functionalities are largely distinct. Essential Upsell focuses on increasing sales through product recommendations, while UpCharge focuses on managing pricing and fees. Ensure that the fee structures of UpCharge do not counteract the upsell strategies of Essential Upsell.
Does either app support volume discounts?
The description of Essential Upsell alludes to 'buy x get y' promotions and product bundles, which can be forms of volume discounting. UpCharge Fees Addons Surcharge does not directly support volume discounts, as its purpose is to add fees, not reduce prices.
Which app is more suited for international businesses?
UpCharge Fees Addons Surcharge is specifically suited for international businesses that need to add tariffs, manage location-based fees, and comply with international regulations. Essential Upsell & Cross Sell is valuable for increasing sales regardless of the customer's location, but doesn't directly address international pricing complexities.
Is Shopify Plus required for either app?
UpCharge Fees Addons Surcharge has enhanced functionality for Shopify Plus users, specifically related to payment and shipping method-based fees. Essential Upsell & Cross Sell doesn't mention any Shopify Plus-specific requirements and will function well on standard Shopify plans.
