Filey ‑ Files Backup & Export vs Variant Description OMGfor Shopify (2026)
Filey - Files Backup & Export focuses on backing up and transferring a store's files, especially media assets like product images and videos, stored in the 'Content -> Files' section. Its strength lies in simplifying the process of exporting and importing these files, making it ideal for merchants migrating stores or needing a backup solution for their media assets. Variant Description OMG, on the other hand, is geared towards enhancing product pages by allowing merchants to add detailed descriptions for each product variant, including metafields. This caters to merchants selling complex products with varying specifications, aiming to improve clarity for customers and reduce returns. While both apps share the 'Content' category on Shopify, their functionalities and target audiences are distinct. Filey serves the purpose of data portability and backup, while Variant Description OMG focuses on enriching product information and improving the customer experience on the product page. The large difference in the number of reviews between the two apps (192 vs 69) could suggest Filey has been available for longer or has a broader appeal, but both apps maintain a high rating of 4.9/5. Choosing between the two depends entirely on the merchant's specific needs: backing up media or improving variant descriptions.

Our Verdict
For merchants primarily concerned with backing up their store's files, particularly media assets, or migrating their store to a new platform, Filey - Files Backup & Export is the clear choice. Its one-click export and import functionality and ability to preserve file names make it a straightforward and efficient solution.
However, if the priority is to enhance product page descriptions and provide detailed information for each variant of a product, Variant Description OMG is the better option. It empowers merchants to communicate specific details about variants, potentially leading to increased sales and reduced customer confusion. While Filey solves data portability challenges, Variant Description OMG enhances the shopping experience.
