Gather: Refer a Friend vs Simple Promotions and Upsellsfor Shopify (2026)
Gather: Refer a Friend focuses exclusively on leveraging existing customers to drive new acquisitions through referral programs. Its key strengths lie in its comprehensive feature set for building and managing these programs, including customizable reward tiers, various invitation methods (email, social media, messaging), and integration with Klaviyo. Its description emphasizes a high ROAS and low CPA acquisition channel. In contrast, Simple Promotions and Upsells, based on the limited data, falls into the 'Promotions - Other' category but lacks specific details about its functionalities. The minimal review count and description make it difficult to determine its strengths and intended use cases beyond general promotions.

Our Verdict
For merchants specifically looking to implement a robust referral program with customizable rewards, diverse invitation methods, and Klaviyo integration, Gather: Refer a Friend is the clear choice. Its comprehensive feature set and focus on referral marketing provide a well-defined solution. Simple Promotions and Upsells, due to the lack of detailed information and limited reviews, is difficult to evaluate effectively. It may be suitable for general promotional needs, but without further data, it's impossible to recommend it over Gather for referral-specific strategies. If a merchant needs a specific promotion or upsell that gather can't accomplish, then simple promotions and upsells might be better. More reviews would be helpful.
