Materials Inventory vs OFS BackSort Product Managerfor Shopify (2026)
Materials Inventory and OFS BackSort Product Manager serve fundamentally different needs for Shopify merchants. Materials Inventory is designed for makers and manufacturers who require robust inventory management capabilities, particularly those dealing with raw materials and product creation. It focuses on features such as bills of materials, real-time inventory synchronization, cost tracking, and purchase order management. Its key strength lies in enabling accurate inventory control and profitability analysis for businesses involved in manufacturing. OFS BackSort Product Manager, conversely, is geared towards optimizing the online storefront experience by automatically sorting products based on stock availability and other criteria like sales performance. Its primary focus is on improving product visibility and boosting conversions by ensuring that in-stock items are prominently displayed. This app caters to merchants who prioritize enhancing customer experience and maximizing sales efficiency through automated product sorting. Given its focus on storefront optimization rather than inventory management, OFS BackSort targets a different merchant profile – those primarily concerned with sales conversion rather than production. The lack of reviews and zero rating for OFS BackSort, compared to the perfect rating and almost 50 reviews for Materials Inventory, suggests a significant difference in user satisfaction and/or adoption of the respective apps. Materials Inventory clearly demonstrates established market validation and customer confidence, while OFS BackSort lacks credible evidence for performance or reliability.

Our Verdict
Materials Inventory is the clear choice for merchants who manufacture their own products or manage complex raw material inventories. Its robust features provide granular control over inventory levels, costs, and profitability, making it essential for operational efficiency in a manufacturing context. OFS BackSort Product Manager, on the other hand, would be more suitable for general e-commerce stores aiming to optimize their product presentation and boost conversion rates. However, the lack of any reviews or ratings raises serious concerns about its reliability and effectiveness, making it a risky choice compared to the established Materials Inventory.
Unless OFS BackSort Product Manager can demonstrate significant improvements in user feedback and performance data, Materials Inventory is the safer and more valuable investment for merchants with complex inventory needs or those seeking a proven solution with a strong track record. The merchant should look for demonstrable benefits from Backsort - such as A/B test results - before using a product with no reviews.
