Materials Inventory vs SimpleSync » Sync by SKUfor Shopify (2026)
Materials Inventory and SimpleSync » Sync by SKU both address inventory management needs on Shopify, but cater to vastly different segments. Materials Inventory is designed for makers and manufacturers who need granular control over raw materials, production processes, and profitability tracking. It boasts a high rating (5/5) and a larger number of reviews (49), suggesting greater user satisfaction and adoption. Key features include real-time inventory updates, bill of materials management, purchase order creation, and low inventory alerts, making it a comprehensive solution for businesses with complex manufacturing workflows. SimpleSync » Sync by SKU, on the other hand, focuses on a much simpler scenario: synchronizing inventory across multiple product listings that represent the same physical item (identified by SKU). With a lower rating (3.5/5) and fewer reviews (20), it appears to serve a niche market – particularly merchants selling unisex products or those wishing to present identical items under different product pages for marketing purposes. Its core strength lies in its simplicity and ease of use for this specific inventory synchronization task. The target user is someone managing identical products under different names or product pages, without needing robust BOM or manufacturing functionalities.

Our Verdict
For manufacturers managing raw materials, bills of materials, and tracking production costs, Materials Inventory is the clear choice. Its comprehensive feature set, higher rating, and greater number of reviews suggest a more robust and reliable solution for complex inventory management. The low inventory alerts and purchase order features provide added value.
SimpleSync » Sync by SKU is best suited for merchants selling unisex products or those creating multiple product pages for the same item to improve marketing efforts. If your inventory management needs are limited to synchronizing stock levels across identical products identified by SKU, this app offers a simple and potentially cost-effective solution. However, the lower rating should prompt careful consideration of user reviews before committing.
Common Questions
Can Materials Inventory synchronize inventory across different Shopify stores?
The app description does not explicitly state cross-store synchronization capabilities. It is highly probable that it is limited to a single Shopify store instance.
Does SimpleSync support complex bundles with multiple tracked items?
The description only mentions inventory tracking for *simple* bundles where *one* item has tracked inventory. Complex bundles are likely not supported.
What happens if I accidentally oversell on one product linked by SimpleSync?
SimpleSync keeps inventory in sync. So, if one of the products gets an oversell, the app ensures that the same amount is taken from the inventory of other products linked, so it would likely propagate the oversell.
Can Materials Inventory help me calculate the cost of goods sold (COGS)?
Yes, the app description mentions tracking raw materials costs and product profitability, implying it can assist with COGS calculations, although specific COGS reports might not be a dedicated feature.
Is there a free trial for either Materials Inventory or SimpleSync?
The provided data does not include information about free trials. Merchants should check the Shopify App Store listing for each app to confirm trial availability.
