Monocle: AI Personalization vs WAX: marketing on WhatsAppfor Shopify (2026)
Monocle: AI Personalization and WAX: marketing on WhatsApp are both Shopify apps designed to enhance customer engagement and drive revenue, yet they approach this goal with fundamentally different strategies. Monocle leverages AI to personalize customer journeys across existing channels like email and SMS, optimizing messaging timing and content selection based on AI-driven insights. The app focuses on improving retention through intelligent automation and requires minimal manual effort after setup, targeting merchants already using established communication channels who want to automate and optimize their existing marketing efforts using AI. WAX, on the other hand, centers its approach around WhatsApp marketing, capitalizing on the platform's high open and response rates to create conversational experiences. WAX focuses on direct engagement through WhatsApp campaigns and automated flows, emphasizing conversational marketing. It aims to help merchants recover abandoned carts, send back-in-stock alerts, and re-engage customers post-purchase via WhatsApp. WAX targets merchants seeking to leverage WhatsApp's unique advantages for immediate customer interactions and direct sales efforts, especially those with a strong customer base in regions where WhatsApp is a primary communication channel. The apps both aim to improve LTV, but take drastically different paths to achieving that goal.

Our Verdict
For merchants already utilizing email and SMS marketing and seeking a hands-off approach to optimize existing campaigns, Monocle: AI Personalization provides an AI-driven solution to improve personalization and engagement automatically. This app is ideal for those who want to leverage AI to make their marketing efforts more efficient and personalized across multiple channels. On the other hand, WAX: marketing on WhatsApp is best suited for merchants who want to tap into the power of WhatsApp for direct customer engagement and sales. It's particularly useful for businesses with a significant customer base that uses WhatsApp and who desire direct, conversational interactions to improve customer experience and drive conversions.
Given the limited reviews for Monocle, WAX has more established credibility in the market. However, if the promise of AI-driven personalization is enticing and you're already heavily invested in other channels, Monocle could be a good fit, provided you're comfortable being an early adopter. Ultimately, channel preference and the desired level of direct engagement are the deciding factors.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up and use?
Monocle advertises itself as a no-code solution that natively integrates with leading CRM, email, and SMS providers, suggesting a streamlined setup. WAX requires building conversational flows and linking the inbox to support tools, implying potentially more setup effort but also more control.
Which app is better for customer support?
WAX explicitly mentions seamless chat with customers and linking the inbox to support tools, making it more directly geared towards enhancing customer support through WhatsApp. Monocle focuses on optimizing marketing messaging and may not offer direct support features.
Which app is more suitable for a global audience?
WAX's suitability for a global audience depends on WhatsApp's penetration in different regions. In areas where WhatsApp is dominant, WAX is likely more effective. Monocle, being channel-agnostic within email and SMS, could be better suited for regions with diverse communication preferences.
Which app provides better ROI tracking?
Both apps claim to track performance and optimize results. However, Monocle emphasizes tracking performance simply across all channels, whereas WAX focuses on optimizing campaigns and automations within WhatsApp. Therefore, Monocle likely offers a more holistic view of marketing performance across multiple touchpoints, depending on the specific implementation and data displayed within each app.
Which app requires more existing marketing infrastructure?
Monocle requires existing email and SMS marketing infrastructure to operate effectively since it builds upon those channels. WAX, while potentially benefiting from existing channels, primarily relies on WhatsApp, making it a potentially viable starting point for merchants with limited marketing infrastructure otherwise.
