Native Metafields vs Product Extra Infofor Shopify (2026)
Native Metafields and Product Extra Info are both Shopify apps aimed at enhancing product information management, but they approach the problem from different angles. Native Metafields focuses on simplifying the direct manipulation of Shopify's native metafields, offering features like bulk editing, import/export, and file uploads. It is positioned as a tool for merchants already familiar with metafields or willing to learn how to use them effectively. In contrast, Product Extra Info aims to abstract away the complexity of metafields entirely. It provides a simplified interface for adding custom product fields without requiring any coding or manual metafield setup. This makes it particularly appealing to non-technical users. The core difference lies in the level of control and technical expertise required. Native Metafields empowers users to directly manage the underlying metafield structure, offering flexibility and advanced features, while Product Extra Info prioritizes ease of use and rapid deployment, sacrificing some of the granular control. Native Metafields seem to cover more types of metafields. Native Metafields looks like it supports all types: color picker, date & time, files, references, JSON, text, while Product Extra Info does not explicitly state that it supports JSON, but does mention text, numbers, Image, Date, and Url.

Our Verdict
For merchants who are comfortable working directly with metafields and need advanced features like bulk editing, import/export, and file uploads, Native Metafields is the better choice. The ability to filter, search, and update metafields directly within the app offers significant time savings and improved control. However, for merchants who are new to Shopify or prefer a simpler, no-code solution, Product Extra Info is more appropriate. Its ease of use and dynamic field creation make it ideal for quickly adding custom product information without the hassle of configuring metafields. Product Extra Info might be a great choice for a merchant who wants to add a simple sizing guide to all their apparel products but does not want to touch any code.
