OpenFiskal TSE & RKSV for POS vs Tax Rex ‑ Sales Tax Automationfor Shopify (2026)
OpenFiskal TSE & RKSV for POS and Tax Rex - Sales Tax Automation are both highly-rated Shopify apps (5/5 stars), but cater to entirely different geographic and regulatory needs. OpenFiskal focuses on enabling merchants within Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (DACH region) to comply with local fiscal regulations (KassenSichV and RKSV). It provides features for generating digitally signed receipts with QR codes directly from Shopify POS, creating compliant Z-reports and cashbooks, and generating exports suitable for audits. Tax Rex, on the other hand, addresses the complexities of US state sales tax compliance. It automates sales tax report generation, facilitates timely filing of tax returns, and provides economic nexus alerts to help merchants manage sales tax obligations across different states. While both apps aim to simplify compliance and reduce administrative burden, they target drastically different legal frameworks and business contexts. Tax Rex provides more features in the US sales tax realm like automatically alerting the user when a new state nexus is triggered and supporting registering in new states. OpenFiskal has features to help merchants in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland produce receipts and exports to meet the requirements for audits. Ultimately, the choice between them comes down to the merchant's location and the specific regulatory requirements they face. One focuses on physical point of sale transactions and the other focuses on sales and use tax.

Our Verdict
The choice between OpenFiskal TSE & RKSV for POS and Tax Rex - Sales Tax Automation is straightforward: If you are a Shopify POS merchant operating in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland and need to comply with KassenSichV and RKSV regulations, OpenFiskal is the only relevant solution. It offers the tools to generate the necessary digitally signed receipts and compliant reports. If you are a US-based e-commerce business selling across state lines and grappling with the complexities of US state sales tax, Tax Rex is the better choice. It provides the features necessary to navigate nexus, generate reports, and file returns accurately and on time.
While Tax Rex has more reviews, reflecting potentially wider adoption among its target US audience, OpenFiskal's 5/5 rating indicates high satisfaction among its DACH-region users. Neither app is superior in a general sense; their value lies in their targeted solutions for distinct regulatory environments. If a merchant needs both German fiscal compliance and US Sales Tax compliance, they would need *both* apps.
