OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification vs Risksumo — Prevent COD Fraudfor Shopify (2026)
OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification and Risksumo — Prevent COD Fraud both aim to reduce losses from fraudulent or undeliverable Cash on Delivery (COD) orders on Shopify. However, they approach the problem with fundamentally different strategies. OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification focuses on proactively confirming order validity with customers using One-Time Passwords delivered via WhatsApp, SMS, or Email, aiming to reduce RTO (Return to Origin) by ensuring customers genuinely placed the order. It also provides order status updates, improving customer confidence. This is a 'hands-on' confirmation approach. OTP targets merchants in regions where COD fraud is prevalent and communication via WhatsApp/SMS is highly effective (e.g., India, Pakistan, Philippines, Egypt). Risksumo, in contrast, uses a risk assessment engine to assign risk levels (Low, Medium, High) to each order based on pre-defined fraud prevention rules. This allows merchants to prioritize orders that are more likely to be fraudulent. This is a more 'hands-off', data-driven approach. The core difference is that OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification relies on direct customer interaction for verification, while Risksumo automates fraud detection based on risk factors. OTP requires customer participation, which might introduce friction but offers a higher degree of certainty, especially for first-time or high-value COD orders. Risksumo operates in the background, minimizing customer friction but potentially missing fraudulent orders that don't fit its risk profile. The effectiveness of each app depends on the specific types of fraud a merchant faces and their tolerance for customer interaction versus automated detection.

Our Verdict
For merchants experiencing significant RTO due to fake orders, especially in regions like India, Pakistan, Philippines, or Egypt where WhatsApp and SMS communication is prevalent, OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification offers a more direct and potentially effective solution. The added benefit of order status updates further enhances customer satisfaction. However, this comes at the cost of added friction during the checkout process. For merchants seeking a more automated solution that minimizes customer interaction, Risksumo is a better choice. It allows for quick identification of potentially fraudulent orders based on pre-defined risk factors. Risksumo is better suited for businesses operating globally or those that prioritize a frictionless checkout experience above absolute certainty in order verification.
Given the limited number of reviews for both apps, it's crucial to carefully evaluate the specific features and whether they align with your business needs. Consider running trials of both apps (if available) to assess their effectiveness in your unique context. It would be advisable to check each company's development velocity and history to ensure they'll support their respective product. A higher review count, even with the same average rating, often suggests a larger, more mature user base.
Common Questions

OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification explicitly provides automated WhatsApp/SMS updates for order status. Risksumo does not mention any direct customer communication features.
Is OTP ‑ CoD Order Verification only for COD orders?

Which app offers a more comprehensive fraud prevention solution?
Risksumo positions itself as a 'smart shield against fraud,' suggesting a broader fraud prevention focus beyond just COD orders, although their marketing primarily targets COD fraud. OTP mainly focuses on COD order verification, which helps with fraud but is not a comprehensive solution.
