Payment Rules Hide PaymentHero vs Smart Checkout Widgetsfor Shopify (2026)
Payment Rules Hide PaymentHero and Smart Checkout Widgets both aim to enhance the Shopify checkout experience, but they address fundamentally different problems. Payment Rules Hide PaymentHero focuses on optimizing the payment method selection process by allowing merchants to sort, hide, and rename payment options based on customer segments and business rules. This targets merchants seeking to improve conversion rates by streamlining payment choices. Smart Checkout Widgets, on the other hand, concentrates on boosting Average Order Value (AOV) through automatic discounts, BOGO offers, and gift selections directly within the checkout flow. It aims to increase sales by incentivizing customers to add more to their carts. The primary distinction lies in their core function: one controls the *availability* of payment methods, while the other *incentivizes* purchases through deals and promotions. Payment Rules Hide PaymentHero offers a higher number of reviews (218) indicating greater adoption and potentially a longer track record in the Shopify app ecosystem. Smart Checkout Widgets, with only 2 reviews, seems to be a newer entrant. Both apps boast perfect 5/5 ratings, suggesting high user satisfaction, but the vastly different sample sizes make it difficult to directly compare their reliability. The target audience for Payment Rules Hide PaymentHero is broad, encompassing any merchant looking to refine their payment options. Smart Checkout Widgets seems to be geared towards larger Shopify Plus merchants that have access to checkout customization.

Our Verdict
For most standard Shopify merchants focused on optimizing their existing checkout process and ensuring the right payment methods are visible to the right customers, Payment Rules Hide PaymentHero is likely the better choice. Its focus on simplifying payment options and improving conversion rates, coupled with a significant number of positive reviews, suggests a reliable and effective solution.
Smart Checkout Widgets, with its focus on AOV boosting through discounts and gifting, is specifically targeted towards Shopify Plus merchants who have the necessary platform capabilities and strategic focus to implement such complex checkout promotions. The limited review count means it is more of an unknown, and the complexity of checkout customization implies a higher technical barrier to entry.
