Pennylane vs Sidr ‑ Sales Tax Automationfor Shopify (2026)
Pennylane and Sidr ‑ Sales Tax Automation are both Shopify apps in the Finances category, but they cater to vastly different needs. Pennylane, originating from France, aims to be an all-in-one financial management and accounting platform, connecting business owners with their accountants. It focuses on centralizing financial flows and streamlining collaboration, offering features like accounting, sales management, expense tracking, and treasury management. Sidr, on the other hand, is a US-based solution solely focused on automating US sales tax compliance, including nexus tracking, registration, reporting, and filing. The key differentiator lies in their scope. Pennylane offers a broad suite of financial management tools geared towards simplifying accounting and collaboration. It appears to target merchants who want a comprehensive solution for managing their finances and working with their accountants. Sidr, however, provides a niche solution specializing in US sales tax automation, targeting merchants primarily based in the US who need help with complex sales tax regulations. The apps also differ significantly in user feedback. Sidr boasts a perfect 5/5 rating with a substantial 52 reviews, suggesting high user satisfaction and a proven track record. Pennylane, while attempting a broader scope, has a lower rating (3.7/5) and a very limited number of reviews (2), making it harder to assess its reliability and user experience.

Our Verdict
For US-based Shopify merchants struggling with sales tax compliance, Sidr ‑ Sales Tax Automation is the clear choice. Its perfect rating, substantial review count, and focused feature set make it a reliable and valuable solution. Its feature set is specifically dedicated to making sure your business is compliant with state and local tax regulations.
Pennylane may be suitable for merchants, particularly those in France or those collaborating closely with accountants, who seek a broader financial management platform. However, its limited reviews and lower rating suggest proceeding with caution and exploring alternative options with more established track records. While Pennylane has the scope to be a more comprehensive finance offering, the review scores combined with its limited review history, make it hard to recommend over a more focused and positively reviewed app like Sidr.
