Pix ‑ Photo Background Remover vs Rubik Variant Images & Swatchfor Shopify (2026)
Pix ‑ Photo Background Remover and Rubik Variant Images & Swatch are both 5-star rated Shopify apps in the 'Images and media' category, but they cater to drastically different needs. Pix focuses on simplifying product image editing by automatically removing backgrounds, allowing merchants to achieve a clean and professional look. Its primary strength lies in bulk processing and AI-powered image generation, targeting merchants who struggle with photo editing and desire a quick, visually consistent presentation of their products. Our Verdict
The choice between Pix ‑ Photo Background Remover and Rubik Variant Images & Swatch depends entirely on the merchant's specific needs. If the primary concern is creating clean, professional product images by removing backgrounds and potentially generating new ones, Pix is the clear winner. Its one-click bulk processing and AI image generation capabilities are highly valuable for merchants with large catalogs or limited photo editing resources.
However, if the merchant offers products with multiple variations and wants to provide customers with a clear and intuitive way to view these variations, Rubik is the superior choice. Its ability to display variant-specific images and swatches is crucial for enhancing the customer experience and reducing returns. While Pix can improve overall product presentation, Rubik addresses the specific challenge of managing product variants effectively.
Common Questions
Which app is better for merchants new to Shopify?
Pix may be slightly easier to grasp initially due to its single function - background removal - executed with a very simple interface. The AI image generation might add a layer of complexity, but it's optional. Rubik requires understanding of product variants, which might be a steeper learning curve for absolute beginners. However, both claim a user-friendly design.
Can Pix and Rubik be used together?
Potentially, yes. A merchant could use Pix to remove the backgrounds from their product images, creating a clean base, and then use Rubik to display those clean images for different variants of the product. They address completely different parts of the product presentation.
Which app will have a bigger impact on conversion rates?
Both aim to increase conversions, but in different ways. Pix achieves it by improving the visual appeal of product images, making them more engaging. Rubik does it by providing a clear and intuitive way for customers to explore product variations, reducing confusion and doubt. The impact depends on the specific challenges the store faces. If blurry or cluttered images are the problem, Pix will have a bigger impact. If customers are confused by product variants, Rubik will be more impactful.
How much technical expertise is required to use each app?
Both apps claim to work seamlessly with existing themes and page builders, suggesting minimal technical expertise is needed. Pix seems to require even less, with its one-click background removal functionality. Rubik might require slightly more setup to properly configure variant images and swatches, but is still presented as a no-code solution.
Which app provides better long-term value?
The long-term value depends on the business model. If the merchant frequently adds new products and needs to constantly clean up images, Pix offers sustained value through its background removal automation and, potentially, AI image generation. If the merchant offers products with a consistent set of variants, Rubik provides sustained value by optimizing the product browsing experience and reducing returns. Both apps offer value within their respective domains.
