POS Variable Priced Products vs VariPrice ‑ POS Custom Pricingfor Shopify (2026)
Both POS Variable Priced Products and VariPrice - POS Custom Pricing aim to address the need for flexible pricing within the Shopify POS system. POS Variable Priced Products targets merchants selling items with inherently variable prices at the point of sale, like florists or vintage clothing sellers, by enabling real-time price adjustments directly within the POS interface, preserving reporting integrity. VariPrice - POS Custom Pricing, on the other hand, is geared towards merchants who want to set and maintain different, fixed prices for the same product across their online store and different POS locations, enabling location-based pricing strategies. The core difference lies in their pricing model. POS Variable Priced Products facilitates dynamic pricing at the moment of sale, while VariPrice enables predetermined, location-specific pricing. POS Variable Priced Products also focuses on maintaining accurate sales reporting even with variable prices by integrating with the existing product catalog, as well as more robust cost of goods sold and margin tracking functionality. VariPrice emphasizes simplicity in managing different price lists across multiple locations from a centralized dashboard. However, it is important to note VariPrice requires an internet connection and is incompatible with Cart Transformer apps.

Our Verdict
For merchants needing on-the-fly price adjustments at the POS, particularly those concerned with accurate cost of goods sold and margin reporting, POS Variable Priced Products is the superior choice. This is especially true for businesses like florists, vintage clothing stores, or jewelers, where item pricing fluctuates.
However, if the primary goal is to establish and maintain consistent, yet different, prices across various POS locations and the online store, and you don't use Cart Transformer apps, VariPrice - POS Custom Pricing is more suitable. The centralized dashboard simplifies managing distinct price lists. Given the significantly higher review count for POS Variable Priced Products, and the detail surrounding features in the sales reporting and inventory tracking category, that app appears to be more mature and feature-rich at this time. Consider the internet connection requirement for VariPrice if that might be problematic for your POS setup.
Common Questions
Which app is better for tracking cost of goods sold?
POS Variable Priced Products explicitly mentions including product cost (COGS) in Shopify sales reporting, making it the better choice for detailed cost tracking.
Can I use both apps to offer discounts?
While both apps impact pricing, neither are specifically described as dedicated discount apps. They focus on variable or location-based pricing, not blanket discounts across product catalogs.
Does either app require duplicating products?
VariPrice explicitly states it avoids product duplication, while POS Variable Priced Products doesn't mention duplication and instead uses existing products.
Which app is easier to set up?
VariPrice, with its centralized dashboard and CSV import/export functionality, might be initially easier to set up if you have many products with different location-based prices. However, POS Variable Priced Products appears to only require configuring it in the product settings in the app and is not cumbersome to setup either, though only has real-time, point-of-sale variability.
What if I want to change prices based on customer type (e.g., wholesale)?
Neither app explicitly supports customer-specific pricing. You would likely need a separate app focused on wholesale or customer-group pricing, or use a discount code approach.
