#ProductReference vs WebAppsLive ‑ Fields Managerfor Shopify (2026)
#ProductReference and WebAppsLive ‑ Fields Manager are both Shopify apps operating within the Metafields category, but they serve distinctly different purposes. #ProductReference focuses on *automatically* generating and maintaining product reference lists based on matching metafield values, targeting merchants who want to create relationships between products (e.g., matching styles or colors) without manual upkeep. Its value proposition lies in automation and related product discovery. In contrast, WebAppsLive ‑ Fields Manager offers tools for *manual* bulk management of single-line text metafields, aiming at merchants who need efficient tools for viewing, editing, and printing metafield data. The primary difference is their approach to metafield management: automation versus manual bulk editing. #ProductReference actively creates and updates a specific type of metafield data (product references), whereas WebAppsLive ‑ Fields Manager provides tools for merchants to directly manipulate existing metafield data (single-line text fields). Furthermore, WebAppsLive ‑ Fields Manager offers print-slip functionality, which is absent in #ProductReference. The significant difference in ratings (0/5 vs 5/5) and review count (0 vs 8) heavily favors WebAppsLive ‑ Fields Manager at this point in time, suggesting greater user satisfaction, perceived value, and/or reliability.

Our Verdict
WebAppsLive ‑ Fields Manager is the stronger choice for merchants who need a tool to efficiently manage existing single-line text metafields in bulk and/or require print-slip functionality. Its positive rating and user reviews provide a degree of confidence in its reliability and usefulness. Its strength lies in offering precise control over existing data. #ProductReference, while conceptually interesting for automated product referencing, currently lacks any user reviews or ratings, making it a higher-risk choice. If automatic product linking is a critical need, and a merchant is willing to be an early adopter and provide feedback, it might be worth testing. However, for merchants who require a proven solution for general metafield management, WebAppsLive ‑ Fields Manager is the preferable option.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to use?
Without user reviews for #ProductReference, it's difficult to say definitively. However, WebAppsLive - Fields Manager likely offers a more conventional and understandable interface for basic metafield management, while #ProductReference's ease of use depends on the setup of the matching values to be selected.
Can #ProductReference edit existing metafields?
#ProductReference focuses on *creating* and *updating* a specific metafield containing product references. It isn't designed for general-purpose metafield editing, only for the one metafield it manages automatically.
Does WebAppsLive ‑ Fields Manager support automated metafield updates?
No, WebAppsLive ‑ Fields Manager focuses on manual bulk editing and does not provide automated metafield updates based on matching values.
Which app is suitable for creating related products sections on a product page?
Both apps can contribute to creating a related products section. #ProductReference automates the *creation of the data* (the product references), while WebAppsLive - Fields Manager *helps manage* a metafield holding a manually created list of products for the section. Ultimately, the actual display of related products on the product page would be handled by a Shopify theme or a separate app.
