Real ID ‑ ID verification vs Yofifor Shopify (2026)
Real ID - ID verification and Yofi both address fraud prevention for Shopify merchants, but they tackle different aspects and cater to slightly different needs. Real ID focuses on verifying customer identities through ID checks, primarily to prevent chargeback fraud and ensure compliance with age-restricted products. Its core strength lies in its AI-powered ID verification system and its ability to trigger checks based on various order criteria. This app is suitable for merchants selling age-sensitive goods or those experiencing chargeback issues stemming from identity-related fraud. Yofi, on the other hand, specializes in combating return fraud and policy abuse. It identifies fraudulent behaviors related to returns, such as fake tracking or 'Did Not Arrive' claims. The fundamental difference lies in their approach: Real ID verifies identity upfront or at specific triggers, while Yofi analyzes return patterns and customer behavior to detect fraud. Real ID emphasizes secure ID verification and compliance, providing tools to check and store customer IDs. This makes it especially useful in situations where proving customer identity is essential. Yofi focuses on telemetry and AI to identify return fraud risks, allowing merchants to safeguard their return policies and improve profitability by reducing losses from fraudulent returns.

Our Verdict
If your primary concern is verifying customer identity to prevent chargebacks or comply with age restrictions, Real ID - ID verification is the better choice. Its ID verification system and trigger-based checks offer a robust solution. However, if you're primarily struggling with return fraud, policy abuse, and high return rates, Yofi is the more suitable option. Yofi's focus on analyzing return patterns and customer behavior provides a targeted approach to combating return-related fraud. Consider your specific fraud challenges when making your decision. Merchants dealing with both issues may need to consider integrating both apps or evaluating alternative solutions offering broader fraud protection.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up?
Based on the descriptions, Real ID emphasizes a no-code setup, suggesting a simpler initial configuration. Yofi requires more data to analyze return patterns effectively, potentially leading to a longer setup and calibration period.
Which app is better for preventing underage purchases?
Real ID is explicitly designed for age verification, making it the clear choice for preventing underage purchases of restricted goods. Yofi doesn't address age verification directly.
Which app is better for long-term fraud prevention?
Both apps can contribute to long-term fraud prevention. Real ID's ability to remember repeat verified customers reduces friction while maintaining security. Yofi's ongoing analysis of return patterns allows merchants to adapt their policies and strategies as fraud tactics evolve.
Which app offers a free trial or diagnostic?
Yofi offers a free bad actor diagnostic, allowing merchants to quantify their fraud risks before committing to the app. Real ID's description does not mention a free trial or diagnostic. However, many Shopify apps provide free trials to allow merchants to test the app's functionality before purchasing a paid plan.
Can these apps be used together?
Potentially, yes. Real ID can verify customer identities during the initial transaction to prevent chargeback fraud, while Yofi can analyze return behavior afterward to prevent return-related fraud.
