Scala GDPR EU Cookie Banner vs Ultimate GDPR EU Cookie Bannerfor Shopify (2026)
Scala GDPR EU Cookie Banner and Ultimate GDPR EU Cookie Banner both aim to provide Shopify merchants with GDPR-compliant cookie consent banners. Scala focuses on simplicity and lightweight implementation, highlighted by its claim of not altering theme files directly and using a cookie-less approach for storing preferences. This potentially appeals to merchants prioritizing speed and minimal theme interference. Ultimate GDPR, on the other hand, emphasizes comprehensive customization and design control, allowing merchants to tailor the banner to their brand with options for colors, fonts, and layouts. It also offers features like targeting specific regions (EU or all visitors) and flexible placement options on different devices. While Scala prioritizes a no-frills approach with basic customization, Ultimate GDPR offers a more feature-rich solution focused on branding and control over the user experience. However, Scala's warning about requiring manual cookie blocking highlights a crucial difference: Ultimate GDPR likely handles the technical aspect of cookie blocking to some extent (though not explicitly stated, this is implied by its higher feature set and branding around ease of use), whereas Scala requires merchants to manage this independently. Ultimate GDPR also offers the ability to easily link to a privacy policy page, adding another layer of compliance functionality that Scala doesn't explicitly mention.

Our Verdict
For merchants who are comfortable with the technical aspects of GDPR compliance and want a simple, lightweight cookie banner solution, Scala GDPR EU Cookie Banner may be suitable, especially if they prioritize speed and minimal theme alterations. It is also appropriate if privacy, specifically not storing customer preferences using cookies, is paramount. However, given the very small sample size of reviews, it is difficult to draw strong conclusions.
On the other hand, Ultimate GDPR EU Cookie Banner is better suited for merchants who want a more comprehensive and customizable solution with potentially more automated cookie blocking capabilities. It's a strong contender for those seeking to closely integrate the banner's design with their brand and who value the convenience of a one-click installation and more robust feature set. The larger number of reviews provides more confidence in its performance and reliability.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up?
Both apps claim ease of setup, but Ultimate GDPR highlights a 'one-click' installation. Scala emphasizes configuration within the theme editor. Both likely have straightforward setups, but 'one-click' suggests Ultimate GDPR might be slightly simpler initially.
Which app offers more customization options?
Ultimate GDPR EU Cookie Banner provides significantly more customization options, including control over colors, fonts, text, and layout. Scala only allows customization of the message, color, and position.
Which app handles cookie blocking automatically?
Scala GDPR EU Cookie Banner explicitly states that merchants are responsible for blocking cookies. Ultimate GDPR does not explicitly state it provides this functionality, but its description and feature set suggest it likely offers some form of automated cookie blocking or guidance, even if not fully automatic.
Which app is more privacy-focused?
Scala GDPR EU Cookie Banner explicitly mentions not using cookies to store customer preferences. This feature makes it more privacy-focused for merchants prioritizing data minimization.
Which app is more likely to stay updated with evolving GDPR regulations?
While neither app explicitly guarantees ongoing updates, Ultimate GDPR's broader feature set and higher review count might suggest a more actively maintained app. However, without more information on update frequency, this is speculative. Merchants should check update logs for the most current information.
