Shipping Protection —Shipcheck vs Umbrella: In‑house Warrantiesfor Shopify (2026)
Shipping Protection —Shipcheck and Umbrella: In‑house Warranties both empower Shopify merchants to offer protection plans directly, cutting out third-party providers. However, they cater to different needs. Shipcheck focuses on shipping protection (lost, damaged, stolen packages), enabling merchants to offset these costs and generate extra revenue by charging customers a fee for insuring their shipments. It's particularly appealing to merchants looking to reduce shipping-related losses and improve customer trust related to shipping. Umbrella, on the other hand, centers around extended warranties for products, allowing merchants to create and manage 'AppleCare style' protection plans in-house. Its strength lies in providing a comprehensive warranty management system, including claim processing, customer portals, and detailed analytics. Umbrella targets merchants selling products that benefit from extended warranties (e.g., electronics, appliances) who want to build long-term customer relationships and control the warranty experience. The key difference is that Shipcheck addresses shipping risks, while Umbrella manages product warranties after purchase.

Our Verdict
If you're looking to protect against shipping-related losses and offset those costs with customer-funded shipping protection, Shipping Protection —Shipcheck is the clear choice. Its focus is narrow but effective for merchants facing shipping challenges. The higher review count suggests a broader adoption, indicating it may be easier to get started.
However, if your primary goal is to offer extended warranties for your products and build long-term customer relationships through service, Umbrella: In‑house Warranties is the better solution. While it has fewer reviews, its feature set is more comprehensive for warranty management, including claim processing and analytics. It's best suited for merchants selling higher-value products that customers may want to protect with extended warranties.
