Shopify Search & Discovery vs Skio Subscriptions (YC S20)for Shopify (2026)
Shopify Search & Discovery and Skio Subscriptions (YC S20) cater to drastically different needs within the Shopify ecosystem, although both offer solutions related to upselling and cross-selling. Shopify Search & Discovery focuses on improving the on-site shopping experience by optimizing product findability and discovery. It's a free tool provided by Shopify aimed at boosting conversions through enhanced search functionality, product filtering, and personalized recommendations. It empowers merchants to refine the customer journey within their existing store infrastructure. Skio Subscriptions, on the other hand, is a paid subscription platform designed to optimize and grow recurring revenue streams. It targets merchants looking to build or significantly enhance their subscription offerings with features like customer portals, build-a-box options, and automated churn reduction strategies. Skio positions itself as a premium solution for brands ready to elevate their subscription model beyond basic functionality. While Shopify Search & Discovery enhances the general shopping experience to potentially increase average order value, Skio focuses explicitly on maximizing lifetime value and minimizing churn for subscription-based businesses. The 'Upsell and cross-sell' category overlap stems from Skio's ability to upsell existing subscribers and Shopify Search & Discovery's ability to recommend related products during the browsing experience. Their approaches to achieving those aims are entirely different and cater to distinct business models.
