Singleton | Dual Price Display vs Tax Rex ‑ Sales Tax Automationfor Shopify (2026)
Singleton | Dual Price Display and Tax Rex ‑ Sales Tax Automation, while both falling under the Shopify categories of Finances and Taxes, address entirely different needs for merchants. Singleton focuses on price display flexibility, allowing merchants to show both tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive prices, catering particularly to businesses selling to both B2B and B2C customers. Its strength lies in its customization of price presentation and tax rule configuration. Tax Rex, on the other hand, is designed for US-based merchants struggling with the complexities of US state sales tax compliance. It automates tax reporting and filing, provides economic nexus alerts, and simplifies state registration. Its value proposition centers around saving time and ensuring accuracy in sales tax management, a crucial aspect for merchants operating in the US market. The apps do not directly compete, serving distinct segments within the broader financial and tax management landscape.

Our Verdict
The choice between Singleton | Dual Price Display and Tax Rex ‑ Sales Tax Automation depends entirely on the merchant's specific needs. If a business needs to display prices both inclusive and exclusive of tax for different customer segments or locations, and requires granular control over tax rules, Singleton is the more suitable option. It prioritizes a smooth customer experience by displaying prices as needed for different groups of buyers.
Conversely, if a merchant's primary concern is managing US state sales tax compliance, including reporting, filing, and staying informed about economic nexus thresholds, Tax Rex is the clear choice. It automates many of the tedious and error-prone aspects of sales tax management, freeing up the merchant to focus on other aspects of their business. Since Tax Rex relies on taxes already collected in Shopify, it is not a tax calculation solution at the storefront.
Common Questions
Which app handles tax calculation at checkout?
Neither app *directly* calculates taxes at checkout. Singleton modifies *display* based on existing Shopify tax settings and custom rules. Tax Rex relies on Shopify's existing tax collection to generate reports.
Can either app help me register for sales tax in new states?
Tax Rex explicitly offers simplified new state registration for US sales tax. Singleton does not address this.
Does Singleton help with international tax compliance?
While Singleton can apply different tax rates based on location (country), it's more focused on *displaying* prices correctly. It does not automate international tax *compliance* like VAT reporting.
Is Tax Rex suitable for businesses outside the United States?
No. Tax Rex is specifically designed for US state sales tax compliance. Its reports, alerts, and automation features are tailored to the US system.
If I sell both B2B and B2C within the US, do I need both apps?
Potentially. You could use Singleton to manage how prices are displayed differently for your B2B and B2C customers (showing prices including or excluding tax), and Tax Rex to manage your US sales tax reporting and filing obligations. The apps serve very different parts of the business.
