Smart Metafield Collections vs ST: Product & Collection Sortfor Shopify (2026)
Smart Metafield Collections and ST: Product & Collection Sort are both Shopify apps addressing collection management, but they cater to very different needs and complexities. Smart Metafield Collections focuses narrowly on automated collection creation based solely on product metafields, mirroring the functionality of tag-based collections. This app promises simplicity and ease of use for merchants already familiar with Shopify's smart collection system but want to extend it to metafields. It's designed for merchants with simple needs for metafield-driven collections. ST: Product & Collection Sort, on the other hand, is a more comprehensive merchandising tool. It leverages data analytics, including past order data and GA4 metrics, to enable advanced collection sorting and merchandising strategies beyond simple metafield filters. Its feature set targets merchants looking to optimize their collections for revenue generation and reduced manual effort. With features like product pinning, multi-segment sorting, and automated demotion of sold-out items, it aims to provide a more sophisticated and data-driven approach to collection management. However, it likely has a steeper learning curve than Smart Metafield Collections.

Our Verdict
For merchants who only need basic automated collections based on metafields and value simplicity, Smart Metafield Collections might be sufficient, although the lack of reviews is concerning. However, given the absence of any user feedback, using this app presents a risk. ST: Product & Collection Sort is clearly the superior choice for merchants serious about optimizing their collections for sales and user experience. The high rating and numerous reviews suggest a proven track record. The data-driven approach and advanced features provide significantly more value for businesses looking to maximize revenue and minimize manual merchandising efforts.
If a merchant is looking for a simple, potentially free or very low-cost solution to create metafield collections, and is willing to take a risk on an unproven app, Smart Metafield Collections *might* be worth considering. However, the clear recommendation for most Shopify merchants is ST: Product & Collection Sort, despite its potentially steeper learning curve, due to its proven performance and comprehensive feature set.
