Tax Rex ‑ Sales Tax Automation vs TaxWatchfor Shopify (2026)
Tax Rex - Sales Tax Automation and TaxWatch both address the complexities of US sales tax compliance for Shopify merchants, but they cater to different needs and stages of business. Tax Rex positions itself as a comprehensive, all-in-one solution, providing automated filing, accurate reporting, and nexus monitoring. It aims to simplify the entire sales tax process, allowing merchants to focus on growth. TaxWatch, on the other hand, is more of an informational and monitoring tool. It focuses on providing at-a-glance visibility into a store's economic nexus status across all US states, offering data and resource links but not direct filing or reporting automation. The primary difference lies in their level of automation and functionality. Tax Rex handles the heavy lifting of tax reporting and filing, including generating reports based on Shopify data and automated filing on state portals. TaxWatch, however, provides insights and data exports, requiring merchants to handle the actual filing and reporting themselves. Tax Rex also offers features like ignoring marketplace orders, suggesting a focus on merchants who sell both on Shopify and external platforms. Given that TaxWatch has no reviews and a zero rating, it's also worth considering how actively it's being developed or supported versus Tax Rex which has significant user adoption.

Our Verdict
For merchants prioritizing hands-off sales tax compliance and seeking a comprehensive solution that handles filing and reporting, Tax Rex ‑ Sales Tax Automation is the clear choice. Its high rating and numerous positive reviews suggest a reliable and effective service. Its ability to ignore marketplace orders is invaluable for businesses with diverse sales channels.
TaxWatch might be suitable for very small businesses or startups with extremely limited sales and a desire to understand the basics of economic nexus in each state. However, given the lack of reviews and the absence of any automation features, it requires more manual effort and may not be a long-term solution as the business grows. The lack of user validation is a significant risk factor. Overall, the comprehensive automation of Tax Rex is vastly superior to TaxWatch's limited feature set and zero user validation.
