Bird: Email, SMS, WhatsApp vs Dataships Checkout Opt‑infor Shopify (2026)
Bird: Email, SMS, WhatsApp and Dataships Checkout Opt‑in both operate within the SMS marketing category on Shopify, but they offer distinctly different functionalities and target different segments of merchants. Bird aims to be a comprehensive communication platform, offering email, SMS, and WhatsApp integration, while Dataships focuses specifically on optimizing the checkout process for email and SMS opt-ins with a strong emphasis on privacy compliance. Given the limited data on Bird, its value proposition is harder to define definitively, although it suggests a broader communication scope. Dataships positions itself as a tool for revenue growth through enhanced opt-in rates at checkout, catering to merchants seeking to expand their marketing reach while adhering to data privacy regulations. Dataships is also focused on supporting retention efforts. The key difference lies in their scope. Bird appears to be a general-purpose communication platform whereas Dataships has a laser focus on checkout optimization for list building and compliance. Dataships explicitly targets merchants who want to improve their email and SMS marketing list acquisition at the point of purchase, with dynamic consent management and detailed compliance tracking. Given the limited number of reviews, it is difficult to comprehensively assess Bird's ease of use and overall effectiveness. However, the relatively low rating compared to Dataships warrants caution. Dataships' higher rating and larger number of reviews suggest a higher level of user satisfaction, likely driven by its specialized functionality and strong focus on compliance.

Our Verdict
Based on the available data, Dataships Checkout Opt‑in appears to be the stronger choice for merchants specifically aiming to improve email and SMS list acquisition through checkout optimization and prioritize data privacy compliance. The higher rating and significantly larger number of positive reviews suggest a more reliable and effective solution. Its dynamic consent management and Klaviyo integration provide valuable tools for targeted marketing and compliance.
Bird: Email, SMS, WhatsApp may be considered by merchants seeking a broader communication platform encompassing email and WhatsApp in addition to SMS. However, the limited reviews and lower rating necessitate careful evaluation and potentially exploring alternative solutions within that broader category. Merchants should consider trialing Bird, if possible, and closely examine its features and functionality to ensure it meets their specific communication needs before committing. For merchants concerned primarily with checkout opt-in and compliance, Dataships seems to be the clearly superior choice based on the data available.
