BirdseyePost – Direct Mail vs WAX: marketing on WhatsAppfor Shopify (2026)
BirdseyePost – Direct Mail and WAX: marketing on WhatsApp represent fundamentally different approaches to marketing on Shopify. BirdseyePost leverages traditional direct mail, offering a full-service solution that handles strategy, design, printing, and mailing, targeting audiences across North America. Its key strength lies in capturing opted-in leads through QR code scans, providing a bridge between physical and digital marketing. WAX, on the other hand, focuses on conversational marketing via WhatsApp, enabling merchants to automate customer journeys and engage customers directly through personalized messaging. WAX aims to improve customer experience and drive sales using WhatsApp's high open and response rates, while remaining GDPR compliant. The choice between the two depends heavily on the merchant's target audience, marketing strategy, and comfort level with digital vs. traditional methods. BirdseyePost suits merchants aiming to reach a broad geographic area with visually appealing, tangible marketing materials, whereas WAX caters to those seeking direct, personalized communication within a mobile-first environment, especially if they already have a strong presence or wish to build one on WhatsApp.

Our Verdict
For merchants targeting a broad audience across the US and Canada, who appreciate the impact of tangible marketing materials, and desire a hands-off approach with full-service handling, BirdseyePost – Direct Mail is the better choice. The QR code integration effectively bridges the gap between physical and digital engagement.
However, if a merchant is focused on personalized, direct communication with customers, particularly within a mobile-first environment, and seeks to build strong relationships through conversational marketing, WAX: marketing on WhatsApp is the superior option. Its automated flows and direct communication capabilities provide significant opportunities for customer engagement and retention, especially if the merchant already has an established WhatsApp presence or is focused on GDPR compliance.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to use for a marketing novice?
WAX offers a platform for building automated workflows, but also requires familiarity with setting up and managing WhatsApp campaigns. BirdseyePost, as a full-service option, requires less direct involvement, potentially making it easier for novices initially, though it's less flexible.
Which app is better for customer retention?
Both apps offer features for customer retention. WAX leverages personalized WhatsApp messaging for re-engagement, while BirdseyePost uses triggered postcards to win back past customers. WAX probably offers more granular control but requires more active management.
Which app is more scalable?
WAX is more scalable as WhatsApp marketing expands easily and is fully digital. Scaling BirdseyePost would involve higher costs for physical materials and postage, depending on the campaign's ambition.
Which app offers better tracking and analytics?
Both apps offer tracking and analytics. BirdseyePost focuses on who engages with the mailers and drives traffic to the store via their QR codes. WAX tracks performance and helps optimize campaign results on WhatsApp. It's difficult to say definitively which is better without more detailed data on their respective analytics dashboards.
How does GDPR compliance factor into the decision?
WAX explicitly highlights GDPR compliance as a key feature, making it a more suitable option for merchants targeting European customers and those who require robust data protection measures. BirdseyePost needs to ensure GDPR compliance where applicable with its data capture methods.
