Canonical Tag URL Wizard vs Compose ‑ A/B Testingfor Shopify (2026)
Canonical Tag URL Wizard and Compose ‑ A/B Testing are both Shopify apps aimed at site optimization, but they address vastly different needs. Canonical Tag URL Wizard focuses on a very specific and technical aspect of SEO: controlling canonical URLs to improve search engine indexing and ranking. It caters to merchants who are familiar with SEO best practices and want direct control over their site's canonical tags. Compose ‑ A/B Testing, on the other hand, offers a broader solution for website optimization through experimentation and A/B testing. It targets merchants who want to improve conversion rates by testing different versions of their website, appealing to a wider audience with its no-code interface and focus on user experience. The primary difference lies in their functionality. Canonical Tag URL Wizard addresses a need that is not directly addressed by Shopify's native features, allowing merchants to edit canonical tags for products, pages, articles, and collections. Compose focuses on experimentation by allowing merchants to split test different themes and page layouts. While both apps share the 'Site optimization - Other' category, their utility and the skill set required to effectively use them are quite different. One app is for SEO-focused technical adjustments, while the other is for data-driven conversion optimization through testing.

Our Verdict
For merchants struggling with duplicate content issues and seeking precise control over their site's canonical URLs, Canonical Tag URL Wizard is the clear choice. Its sole focus on canonical tag editing fills a crucial gap in Shopify's native capabilities. However, for merchants looking to systematically optimize their website for better conversion rates through A/B testing and experimentation, Compose ‑ A/B Testing is the superior option. Its user-friendly interface and emphasis on flexible testing make it suitable for a broader range of merchants, particularly those without deep technical expertise. While both have excellent ratings, the significantly higher number of reviews for Canonical Tag URL Wizard suggests a more established user base as of 2026, which may offer some reassurance in terms of reliability.
